Colonials to face UMBC Thursday, La Salle Sunday
KICKING OFF: The George Washington women's soccer team will make the short trip to Baltimore to face UMBC on Thursday at 7 p.m. before opening Atlantic 10 Conference play at La Salle on Sunday at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials (3-1-2) wrapped up their four-game homestand at the GW Soccer Field with a 2-1 win over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon. After establishing an early lead with a goal at the 21st minute mark, the Bison responded just seven minutes later to even the score. The Buff and Blue, however, did not back down and found the back of the net once again in the game's first half to pull ahead and finish the day with the 2-1 victory.
POWER FROM PAREJA: Sophomore Maria Pareja paces the squad with six points (3g) after scoring the game-tying goal in the 87th minute against Towson on Thursday and the game winner against the Bison on Sunday. The Fairfax, Virginia, native, has started all six contests and finished the week 6-of-6 in shots on goal.
HERE TO ASSIST: Through six games, four Colonials have found their teammates on the offensive end to tally an assist. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Sorkenn leads the pack with four assists after recording a season-high two helpers against Towson. Sofia Pavon and Sammy Neyman follow closely behind with two assists apiece, while Allie Nornes has accounted for one.
CLUTCH FROM THE CORNER: GW has dominated its opponents from the corner this season, taking 22 through six games while holding its opponents to 17. The Colonials took seven corner kicks on Thursday while limiting the Tigers to a pair and held a 4-3 edge over Bucknell on Sunday. GW converted off the corner against the Bison, with Sammy Neyman positioning the ball right in front of the net, giving Megan McCormick the opportunity to head the ball just beyond the reach of the Bucknell keeper.
ABOUT UMBC: The Retrievers (1-4-2) are coming off back-to-back losses at Lehigh, 2-0, and Longwood, 2-1, last week. Thursday's match will be the first meeting between the two squads.
ABOUT LA SALLE: The Explorers sit 4-3-1 on the season and are coming off a 3-2 loss to Navy on Sunday. GW owns the series, 14-9-1, and last faced La Salle in 2016, where they played to a 1-1 draw.
UP NEXT: GW will return home to host Fordham on Thursday, Sept. 26 for a 3 p.m. kickoff at the GW Soccer Field before hitting the road to face Rhode Island on Sunday, September 29 at 1 p.m.
