Atlantic 10 Player of the Year picked in the eighth round by Philadelphia
WASHINGTON - GW baseball shortstop Nate Fassnacht was drafted in the eighth round of the 2019 MLB Draft on Tuesday, going 240th overall to the Philadelphia Phillies.
Fassnacht grew up just under 70 miles away from Philadelphia in Ephrata, Pa., and has been a lifelong fan of the organization with his family still holding season tickets. He is the first Colonial selected in the top 10 rounds of the MLB Draft since Eric Cantrell was selected in the seventh round of the 2010 MLB Draft. The 240th overall selection is the fifth highest in program history.
Should he sign, Fassnacht would become just the second Colonial to play in the Phillies organization and the first since Sam Knisley in 1960. He was the third-highest selection in the Atlantic 10 this season.
Fassnacht just completed a breakout junior campaign in which he was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and a third team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. GW's everyday shortstop and team MVP hit .372 with a 1.108 OPS and tied the school record with 23 doubles. He finished the campaign ranked among the nation's top 100 performers in 13 different categories.
Fassnacht is the 22nd player in program history to be selected in the MLB Draft, and the eighth in the last five years under head coach Gregg Ritchie. Only one Atlantic 10 school - Saint Louis (9) - has had more players drafted in that time frame.
