NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -Â First-years Ryan Navarro and Zicheng Zeng of the GW men's tennis team were tabbed as First Team All-Conference performers by the Atlantic 10, the league announced on Monday.
This year marks the 11th time in the 13 years of All-Conference teams that GW has had multiple first-team honorees with one nominee in the other two campaigns. Navarro and Zeng are the first Colonial rookies on the first team since Chris Fletcher in 2015.
Navarro was GW's primary #2 singles performer, posting a 19-13 overall record in singles play during his rookie campaign, including a 5-1 mark against conference competition. The Mississauga, Ontario native dropped just five sets in conference play en route to the stellar mark.Â
Navarro teamed with a pair of teammates to go 5-1 against A-10 foes in doubles competition at #3. Overall, he finished his first year with a 21-12 mark in doubles.
Zeng was thrust into the #1 singles position and performed at a high level all year, culminating in a 5-2 mark against the league's top competition. The Chengdu, China native provided points for GW on a consistent basis and topped St. Bonaventure's Indra Patwardhan in the A-10 opening round for his first career postseason point.
Zeng also notched a 5-1 mark in A-10 play as part of the top doubles pair, finishing out an 8-8 dual record. The highlight of the campaign came in a 6-3 win over Dayton's #1 pairing in the regular season, a duo that included the eventual A-10 Performer of the Year in Jordan Benjamin.
GW is in strong position to perform at an even higher level next season with every member of the team who competed in a dual match returning for the 2019-20 season, the second year under head coach Rob Castille.
