Men's Tennis Tabbed as No. 5 Seed for A-10 Championship

Colonials open play with No. 12 St. Bonaventure on Thursday

WASHINGTON -Â George Washington men's tennis has earned the No. 5 seed in this week's A-10 championship, it was announced on Tuesday. The Colonials will open up play at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. against No. 12 seed St. Bonaventure.
Should the Colonials advance, they will battle No. 4 seed Dayton on Friday morning at 9 a.m.
THE REGULAR SEASON:Â GW completed a 5-3 mark in A-10 play, finishing 6-13 overall in the first year under head coach Rob Castille. The Colonials finished above .500 in league play while playing at least four first-years in every single match.
First-year Zicheng Zeng earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors to begin the campaign and played the majority of the spring season at #1 singles and doubles, holding his own with a 5-8 mark with all five wins against league foes. Fellow first-year Ryan Navarro led the team with eight singles triumphs, seven of which came at #2. The duo went 10-3 against conference foes during the year.
GW's doubles contingent posted an impressive 14-6 mark in A-10 play, headlined by Zeng and first-year Ben Barnett's 5-1 mark as the top pair.
TOURNAMENT BREAKDOWN:Â The top four seeds in the tournament - No. 1 VCU, No. 2 Richmond, No. 3 Davidson and No. 4 Dayton - all received byes into the quarterfinals. The Colonials are the highest ranked team in the opening round, followed by George Mason, Fordham, Duquesne, Saint Joseph's, Saint Louis, La Salle and St. Bonaventure.
The quarterfinals will take place Friday morning followed by semifinals on Saturday and the championship match on Sunday.
HISTORY AT THE A-10s:Â The Colonials have advanced to the quarterfinals of the A-10 Championship every year since 2007, winning the championship five times from 2011-16. GW and St. Bonaventure have not met at the tournament since 2009 when the Bonnies came away with a semifinal win.Â
