Colonials host Patriots for A-10 Doubleheader
The Colonials will then have a quick turnaround to their three-game set at St. Bonaventure, which has been moved up a day due to wet weather in the forecast. They'll face the Bonnies in a doubleheader at Joyce Field in St. Bonaventure, N.Y., on Thursday beginning at 2 p.m. before wrapping the series Friday with a noon first pitch.
At 31-13 overall, the Buff and Blue enter the second half of their conference slate needing just two more wins to equal their program record for victories in a season set last spring.
LAST TIME OUT: GW improved to 7-5 in Atlantic 10 play with a 12-4 win in Sunday's series finale at Massachusetts. The Colonials piled up a season-high 18 hits to hand the first-place Minutewomen their first conference loss of the season at Sortino Field.
The Buff and Blue flashed their offensive firepower with 11 different players recording hits and nine scoring runs. Elena Shelepak led the way, going 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.
Sierra Lange slugged a pair of doubles, breaking GW's single-season hits record in the process. The nation's co-leader in hits now has 67 and counting this spring. The versatile sophomore also pitched a complete game vs. the Minutewomen to earn her 19th win of the season.
Priscilla Martinez, Jenna Cone and Alessandra Ponce also recorded multi-hit efforts in the victory.
NATIONAL ATTENTION: GW's strong close to the weekend bumped its team batting average up to .361, which ranks second nationally behind only Oklahoma (.374).
The Colonials lead the nation in hits (445) and also rank among the top 20 in the country in doubles per game (3rd, 1.86), triples per game (8th, 0.36), on-base percentage (14th, .413) and slugging percentage (16th, .539).
Individually, Lange has racked up impressive stats at the plate and in the circle. In addition to being tied with Ohio's Katie Yun for the most hits nationally, the Texas native also slots among the top 50 in the country in batting average (26th, .432), doubles (27th, 14), triples (11th, 5) and total bases (33rd, 97). Pitching-wise, the right-hander is also 14th in victories (19) and 29th in strikeouts (159).
Cone has earned a place among the nation's top sluggers with her 16 home runs (11th), 56 RBIs (sixth), 119 total bases (seventh) and .844 slugging percentage (20th).
COMING ON STRONG: Martinez had five hits in nine at-bats last weekend, continuing her tear in A-10 play. The junior from California is hitting .533 (16-for-30) with a .611 on-base percentage in 12 contests against conference foes.
Primarily hitting in the cleanup spot, Martinez has reached base at least once in each game with six multi-hit efforts. She's yet to strike out facing an A-10 pitcher.
Along the way, Martinez has upped her season batting average to .347 (35-for-101). She currently ranks fifth on the club with 12 extra-base hits (10 doubles, one triple, one home run).
SUPERB STREAK: Jessica Linquist has sparked the GW offense with her consistency at the top of the batting order this season.
The junior from New Jersey tallied the longest recorded hitting streak in the country since 2014 with a run that reached 28 games before ending Saturday in the opener of a doubleheader at UMass. Her program-record streak of 38 consecutive games reaching base ended in the second game of the day.
True to form, Linquist kicked off a pair of new streaks Sunday, going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks in GW's emphatic victory. She is hitting .394 (52-for-132) with a .494 on-base percentage this spring.
SCOUTING GEORGE MASON: The Patriots (16-21, 4-8) have dropped two of three games in all four A-10 series so far, most recently going 1-2 against Saint Joseph's last weekend.
George Mason's strength is in a pitching staff that ranks third in the conference with a 3.08 ERA. Bekah Ansbro (8-7, 2.11 ERA in 89 2/3 innings) is the reigning A-10 Pitcher of the Week.
GW has won five of the past seven meetings in the series, including a doubleheader sweep in the Patriots' most recent visit to the Vern on April 19, 2017.
SCOUTING ST. BONAVENTURE: The Bonnies (7-24, 4-9) are fresh off a winning weekend in which they took two out of three at Rhode Island.
Alexandra Deal (.310, 16 runs) is St. Bonaventure's top hitter, while pitcher Rylee Hehir (6.30 ERA, 43 K in 53 1/3 innings) has earned five of the club's seven wins.
The Colonials won last spring's series in D.C. to even the all-time series at 13 victories apiece.
ON DECK: GW wraps up its home slate with a visit from Dayton on April 27-28. The Colonials will open the series by celebrating Military Appreciation Day with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The next day they'll honor their four seniors before a noon first pitch on Senior Day at the Vern.
