Colonials took the first game at the Vern by run rule
WASHINGTONÂ - George Washington softball continued its Atlantic 10 slate Wednesday, splitting a doubleheader vs. George Mason on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials cruised in the opener, earning a 9-1 victory in six innings behind a strong all-around effort from Sierra Lange, who tied the program record with four hits and also earned her 20th win in the circle.
The Patriots came from behind to take the second game, 5-3. The visitors jumped in front for good with a pair of unearned tallies in the top of the seventh.
Jenna Cone paced the Buff and Blue (32-14, 8-6 A-10) in that one with a pair of extra-base hits, including her A-10 leading 17th home run of the spring.
GW 9, George Mason 1 (6 innings):Â The Colonials broke open a tight contest with a six-run fourth inning and went on to claim the run-rule victory.
GW led by a run before batting around in the fourth to score six runs on five hits. Morgan Kummer started the rally with a walk and came around to score on Jessica Linquist's two-run double. Lange and Priscilla Martinez followed with run-scoring hits before Alessandra Ponce's two-out RBI single stretched the lead to 8-1.
The score stayed there until the Colonials ended the game in the bottom of the sixth. Lange's walk-off RBI double scored Linquist, who had led off the frame with a free pass.
Lange finished 4-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and two steals. It was the fourth four-hit game of the season for the nation's leader in hits (72).
The sophomore from Texas picked up another victory with four solid innings in the circle. She allowed just a run on two hits before giving way to Kaitlin Buff, who tossed a pair of scoreless frames.
The hurlers had plenty of support from an offense that rolled up nine runs on nine hits in GW's eighth run-rule win of the season. Linquist went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Marta Fuentes scored twice in her return to the lineup from injury.
George Mason 5, GW 3:Â The Patriots took advantage of a few late GW mistakes to earn the split.
The Colonials grabbed the lead at 3-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Martinez's two-out RBI single brought home Riley Tejcek, and Lange followed her in to score after shaking free of a rundown between third and the plate.
George Mason tied it in the sixth and then added a pair of runs in the seventh aided by a pair of throwing errors. Marina Vitalich closed out the victory for the Patriots with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh.
Cone stoked the Buff and Blue attack, going 2-for-3 with an HBP. The junior slugger's solo homer well over the left field wall tied it at one in the bottom of the third. Her double off the fence in right center started the fifth-inning rally before she was replaced by Tejcek pinch running.
Sidney Bloomfield also tallied a pair of hits for the Colonials in the second game, while Lange reached twice via a single and an intentional walk.
UP NEXT:Â Because of wet weather in the weekend forecast, GW has a quick turnaround to its series at St. Bonaventure. The Colonials and Bonnies are set to kick off the three-game set Thursday at Joyce Field in St. Bonaventure, N.Y., with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
