Colonials racked up season-high 20 run in opening game
The Colonials piled up a season-high run total in the opener to claim a 20-9 win in six innings. They won the nightcap, 4-0, behind Sierra Lange's gem in the circle to improve to 34-14 (10-6 A-10) on the season.
It's the third straight spring the Buff and Blue have established a new mark for victories.
Alessandra Ponce paced the offense against the Bonnies. The sophomore from Nevada went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs to begin the day before knocking in another run in the second game.
Lange picked up victories in both games to improve to 22-10 on the season. The sophomore from Texas was at her best in the second game, tossing a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts.
GW 20, St. Bonaventure 9 (6 innings):Â The Colonials jumped out to an early lead thanks to a seven-run first inning and then surged late with 13 runs over their final two at-bats to earn the run-rule victory.
GW sent 12 batters to the plate in the opening inning to build its 7-0 lead. Jessica Linquist's leadoff triple started the run, which featured five hits, three walks and a St. Bonaventure error. Ponce had a two-run double in the frame with Priscilla Martinez, Faith Weber and Marta Fuentes also driving in runs.
St. Bonaventure fought back to tie it at seven, but the Colonials found separation again with a five-spot in the fifth. Lange and Martinez slugged run-scoring doubles before Ponce launched a two-run homer, her seventh of the season, to make it 12-7.
GW put the game out of reach with eight more in the sixth. Six different Colonials supplied RBIs in the frame, including Ponce, who knocked in her career-high fifth run of the game with a bases-loaded single.
Ponce had plenty of help as the Buff and Blue recorded their most runs in a game since a 20-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson last spring.Â
Seven of the visitors' season high-tying 18 hits went for extra bases, and they also worked 10 walks. Twelve different Colonials scored runs with Linquist, Ponce and Jenna Cone recording three runs apiece.
Linquist reached base five times with three hits and two free passes, while Martinez and Fuentes tallied three hits apiece.
GW 4, St. Bonaventure 0:Â Lange stymied the Bonnies in the nightcap to help the Colonials complete the sweep.
The GW hurler worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first and then breezed the rest of the way. She retired 15 of the final 16 batters she faced, eight of them via strikeout, on the way to her fourth shutout of the spring. It was her 22nd complete game of the season to set a new program mark.
Lange worked the whole way with a lead thanks to Ponce's RBI single in the opening inning. She helped her own cause in the third, scoring following her sixth triple of the season.
Shelepak and Bloomfield added RBI hits in the fifth to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Linquist stoked the offense by walking three times at the top of the order, while Bloomfield and Criza Bulanadi each recorded a pair of hits.
UP NEXT:Â GW will try for the series sweep Friday, taking on the Bonnies in a noon start. The Colonials will be back on the Mount Vernon Campus next weekend hosting Dayton for three games to wrap up their home slate.Â
