Colonials dropped St. Bonaventure again on Friday
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Sierra Lange pitched her second straight shutout Friday to help GW softball beat St. Bonaventure, 2-0, to complete an Atlantic 10 series sweep at Joyce Field.
After throwing a four-hitter in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader, the sophomore from Texas repeated the feat against the Bonnies to pick up her third win of the series, fourth of the week and 23rd of the season.
Elena Shelepak's two-run double with two outs in the fourth inning accounted for the game's only runs.
With the three-game sweep, the Colonials improved to 35-14 on the season and solidified their position in the top half of the A-10 standings at 11-6 in conference play.
Lange was marvelous in the circle again, recording six strikeouts against two walks in the series finale. GW's ace stranded the bases loaded in the second inning and then two more runners in the third before avoiding major trouble the rest of the way. She retired 13 of the final 14 Bonnies that she faced.
Lange tossed her fifth shutout of the season to lower her ERA this spring to 2.47 over 198 innings. With her game-ending strikeout, she tied Amanda Gabriel (2009) for the program record for most strikeouts in a season at 186.
The national leader in hits, Lange also helped her own cause, going 1-for-2 with a walk and a run. She was on first base in the fourth when Shelepak fired her two-out double into right and raced around to score behind pinch runner Olivia Ortlieb.
Priscilla Martinez and Alessandra Ponce also had hits in the victory, while Jenna Cone reached twice via hit by pitch.
UP NEXT:Â GW wraps up its home slate with a visit from Dayton on April 27-28. The Colonials will open the series by celebrating Military Appreciation Day with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The next day they'll honor their four seniors before a noon first pitch on Senior Day on the Mount Vernon Campus.
