Colonials wrap home slate vs. Flyers
Criza Bulanadi, Jayme Cone, Marta Fuentes and Riley Tejcek are set for their final contests in Buff and Blue on the Mount Vernon Campus.
On Saturday, the Colonials and Flyers will meet in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. It's Military Appreciation Day at the Vern in conjunction with GW NROTC, GW Veterans and Veterans Moving Forward.
Sunday's finale marks Senior Day with the pregame ceremony honoring Bulanadi, Cone, Fuentes and Tejcek beginning at 11:50 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW went 4-1 against A-10 competition last week, highlighted by a three-game sweep at St. Bonaventure. The Colonials improved to 35-14 overall, breaking the program record for wins in a season for the third straight spring.
Sierra Lange continued to pace the Colonials in the circle and at the plate. The do-it-all sophomore earned four wins by posting a 1.69 ERA over 29 innings with 28 strikeouts against five walks. She saved her best for last, closing the week with a pair of four-hit shutouts vs. the Bonnies.
The nation's leader in hits, Lange went 8-for-16 over the five games with three extra-base hits, five RBIs and seven runs scored, plus four walks and three stolen bases.
Alessandra Ponce drove in a team-high seven runs on the week with three of her seven hits going for extra bases, while Jessica Linquist (.524 OBP) and Jenna Cone (.571 OBP) continued to produce at the top of the lineup.
STANDINGS CHECK:Â Dayton and GW are both solidly in the top half of the A-10 standings and in position to qualify for the six-team conference championship.
At 8-4 in A-10 play, the Flyers sit in third place, just ahead of the Colonials, who are tied for fourth with Saint Joseph's at 11-6.
SUPER SENIORS: This group of seniors has done its part to help GW reach new heights in recent seasons.
Since joining the Colonials in 2018, Bulanadi has stolen 28 bases while only being caught twice. The speedy outfielder has played flawless defense this season with a perfect field percentage and also posted a .318 batting average with 15 runs scored.
Over the past two seasons, Fuentes has cemented her place as one of the top shortstops in program history. The Florida native has recorded a .375 batting average over 82 games with 78 runs scored and 54 steals. Last season, she put together a fabulous debut campaign, setting single-season program records for hits (65), runs (49) and stolen bases (32), before being named a member of the All-A-10 Championship Team.
Jayme Cone has overcome injuries to total 122.0 innings over 52 appearances in her collegiate career. After missing last season due to elbow surgery, the California native has come back strong to compile a career-best 2.96 ERA in 15 outings this spring en route to a perfect 3-0 mark plus a save.
Tejcek has been a true leader for the Colonials on and off the field. The infielder from Indiana has seen action in 137 games over the past four years, including a career-high 46 this season. She's aided GW's nationally-ranked offense by racking up a career-high 21 runs scored to rank fifth among Colonials. Beyond that, she has completed the U.S. Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Course and will embark on a military career serving our country after graduation.
RECORD WATCH:Â GW is well on its way to rewriting the program record book this season.
Beyond the wins record, the Colonials have already set the team mark for doubles in a season (92), and they enter the weekend needing two hits to break the record for single-season hits (493) and 13 runs to pass the mark for single-season runs (331). Both those records were set last season.
The club is also on pace to smash the previous program bests for batting average (.359), on-base percentage (.418) and slugging percentage (.533).
Individually, a slew of singles-season records have already fallen. Lange has set new marks for hits (75), wins (23) and complete games (23), and tied the strikeout (186) and games started (30) records.
Jenna Cone has set a new program high with 127 total bases. The junior slugger has piled up 17 home runs and 57 RBIs, which means she needs one homer and four RBIs to equal her own GW records in those categories.
In addition, Linquist's 50 runs scored are already a program record.
SCOUTING DAYTON:Â Following a series washout last weekend, the Flyers returned to action Wednesday, dropping a pair of home games against Toledo to fall to 21-22 on the season.
Dayton ranks third in the A-10 in scoring at 4.67 runs per game, paced by Abby Ehrenborg, who sits second in the conference in RBIs (45) and third in home runs (12). Jessica Gilliam (3.42 ERA) and Jessica Weaver (4.37 ERA) have earned nine wins apiece to lead the pitching staff.
ON DECK:Â GW closes the regular season next weekend with a trip to La Salle for three games. The A-10 Championship begins May 8 in Amherst, Mass.
