Colonials look for season sweep of the Tribe on Wednesday
WASHINGTON - GW baseball will head to Williamsburg, Va., on Wednesday for its second straight mid-week matchup with the Tribe of William & Mary. First pitch from Plumeri Park is scheduled for 6 p.m.
OVER THE WEEKEND: The Colonials dropped two of three at Massachusetts this past weekend, salvaging the series finale on Sunday with a 4-2 triumph. GW got two great pitching performances from junior Elliott Raimo on Friday and senior Nate Woods on Sunday, as the duo combined for 11.1 scoreless innings on the hill with six strikeouts and six hits allowed. Offensively, first-year Anthony Frechette led the way, going 5-for-11 (.455) at the dish.
DYNAMIC DUO: Senior Dom D'Alessandro and junior Nate Fassnacht see their names near the top of numerous offensive categories nationally. D'Alessandro and Fassnacht combine for nine top-15 appearances, headlined by the pair ranking 10th and sixth, respectively, in total hits and 11th and 15th, respectively, in batting average.
THEY'RE HEATING UP: GW's longest active hitting streaks come from a pair of rookies on the team, in Frechette and redshirt freshman Derek Ripp. Frechette has started the last six games behind the dish and has hit safely in five straight, culminating in his first career three-hit game on Sunday at UMass. He is 7-for-20 (.350) in the stretch with two doubles and his first career home run, which came last Wednesday against William & Mary.
Ripp has seen more consistent playing time as of late as well, recording a hit in five straight games, all starts. He smacked a trio of doubles to start the streak last Tuesday at UMBC, and is now 9-for-20 (.450) over the last five games with four doubles and three RBI.
ABOUT THE TRIBE: William & Mary dropped two of three over the weekend to James Madison and has now lost seven of its last eight games to fall to 21-14. The Tribe are hitting .251 as a team and are headlined by Hunter Smith, who is second on the team in average at .316 and leads the team in homers (9) and RBI (30). On the mound, the Tribe have a 3.90 team ERA. GW is looking for its third straight win in the series dating back to last year, and is 38-25 against W&M all-time.
