Brophy's long ball proves to be the difference
AMHERST, Mass. - GW baseball pulled out an important victory on Sunday afternoon at Massachusetts, holding on for a 4-2 triumph over the Minutemen at Earl Lorden Field.
The Colonials offense had been held in check through the first two days of the series, but came through with clutch hits when needed on Sunday. The first came in the top of the third when redshirt sophomore Colin Brophy launched a three-run homer with two down to give GW its first lead of the series, 3-0.
That allowed senior Nate Woods to settle in and cruise for the Colonials en route to his second win of the year. Woods worked around three fielding errors in the first four frames, and didn't allow a hit until a bunt single with two down in the last of the fifth.
Woods, in just his second start back from injury, struck out four and walked one in 5.2 innings of work, needing just 79 pitches to do so. First-year Rich Pfluger took over the reigns and retired seven of the first eight he faced to get the game to the ninth inning.
Another two-out swing in the ninth proved important as first-year Anthony Frechette made sure GW capitalized on a leadoff single with a two-out knock to increase the advantage to 4-0. Frechette finished the day with GW's only multi-hit performance, going 3-for-4.
The Minutemen made things interesting in the home half of the ninth by hitting a two-run homer and putting the tying runs on base with one away, but sophomore Tyler Hix entered to induce a strikeout and a groundout for his first save of the year.
GW will remain on the road for its next contest, traveling to William & Mary on Wednesday for a rematch of a game that GW won, 8-4, this past week. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
