Colonials welcome Rams to the Vern this weekend
George Washington softball kicks off its Atlantic 10 schedule this weekend, hosting six-time defending conference champion Fordham on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (21-7) and Rams are set for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. before wrapping the series Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
LAST TIME OUT: GW finished its Buff and Blue Challenge last Sunday with an 8-1 victory over Georgetown. The Colonials closed the weekend with a 2-3 mark on their home field.
Jenna Cone hit her conference-leading 11th home run of the season and drove in three runs, while four Colonial hurlers combined to keep the Hoyas in check.
Alessandra Ponce led the Buff and Blue at the plate for the week, hitting .450 (9-for-20) with three doubles and a pair of homers. The sophomore from Nevada tied the program record with a four-hit effort in a win over Oakland on Friday.
Cone went deep four times for the week, including a two-homer effort last Wednesday in a 10-3 win at Towson. The junior from California totaled 14 RBIs in all across the seven contests.
RPI CHECK:Â The NCAA released its first RPI rankings of the season this week with GW checking in at No. 117 nationally, best among the 10 A-10 squads. The Colonials own four wins over top-100 squads: North Carolina (No. 27), UNC Greensboro (No. 60), Maryland (No. 64) and Towson (No. 99).
POWER SURGE:Â Cone has hit nine home runs in her past 12 games to reach 11 for the season, seven more than anyone else in the A-10.
Cone has driven in 28 runs in that span, including eight multi-RBI performances. The slugger's 41 total RBIs rank second nationally and her average of 1.46 RBIs per game check in at third in the country. She also sits 32nd nationally in slugging percentage (.851).
Thanks to that scorching run, Cone has 41 career home runs, which is the most in GW history. She took over first place on that list with a go-ahead grand slam vs. Manhattan on March 10.
Cone enters the weekend with 161 career RBIs, nine back of Victoria Valos' program record.
OVERWHELMINGÂ OFFENSE:Â As a team, GW continues to rank among the national leaders in most offensive categories. The Colonials are second in hits (284) behind only defending national champion Florida State and third in batting average (.365) with only the Seminoles and Oklahoma ahead of them.
The Buff and Blue are 18th in the nation in scoring at 6.61 runs per game and also rank in the top 20 in doubles per game (1.75), triples per game (0.36), on-base percentage (.415) and slugging percentage (.542).
GW has been paced at the plate by Sierra Lange, whose .463 batting average continues to lead the A-10 and ranks 22nd nationally.
Colonials account for five of the top six batting averages in the A-10 with Cone (.426), Jessica Linquist (.400), Sidney Bloomfield (.391) and Marta Fuentes (.388) also on the list.
SCOUTING FORDHAM:Â The Rams fell, 4-1, at Stony Brook on Tuesday to drop to 7-16 on the season.
Picked No. 2 in the A-10 preseason poll, Fordham is led at the plate by Chelsea Skrepenak (.389 BA, 9 extra-base hits) and in the circle by Madie Aughinbaugh (3.79 ERA, 59 K in 75 1/3 innings).
The only meeting between these teams last season came at the A-10 Championship with Fordham claiming an 8-0 victory on its home field.
ONÂ DECK:Â GW welcomes Morgan State for a non-conference doubleheader next Wednesday, March 27, at 2 p.m. before heading to Saint Joseph's (March 30-31) for its first A-10 road series.
WATCH THIS: Hear from head coach Shane Winkler, Criza Bulanadi, Ponce and Elena Shelepak ahead of the series vs. Fordham.
