Colonials won game two behind the pitching of Faith Weber
The junior hurler went the distance, limiting the six-time defending conference champion Rams to just one earned run over the seven innings. It was her first complete game of the season and the fifth of her career.
Jenna Cone cracked her A-10 leading 12th home run of the season to back Weber's pitching effort with Jessica Linquist, Sidney Bloomfield and Alessandra Ponce also driving in runs for the Colonials (22-8, 1-1 A-10).
Earlier, Fordham pulled away late to take the opener, 9-4. The teams are set to face off in the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
GW 6, Fordham 3:Â The Colonials bounced back to close the day with a victory thanks to Weber's pitching and some timely hitting.
After Fordham took a 2-0 first-inning lead on a Rachel Hubertus home run, GW plated six consecutive runs to seize control.
The home team went in front in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a Fordham error to plate three runs. Sidney Bloomfield's RBI groundout tied the game before Linquist's two-out single scored Criza Bulanadi to make it 3-2.
In the fourth, Cone padded the lead with her two-out blast to straight-away center to score Bulanadi, who had started the frame with a walk. She's now homered 10 times in her past 14 games, boosting her A-10 leading RBI total to 43 for the season along the way.
The inning continued with Ponce singling home Sierra Lange two batters later to push the GW lead to 6-2.
Weber took it from there, earning her third win of the season. The New Jersey native kept the Rams off balance throughout, working around seven hits and four walks.Â
Weber navigated trouble late to close out the victory. In the sixth, she managed to hold the visitors to just one run after they had loaded the bases with three straight singles to begin the inning. The Rams put two on base in the seventh, but the GW pitcher induced a chopper to Cone at third for a double play to end it.
Cone and Priscilla Martinez both reached three times in the victory, while Ponce had a pair of hits, including a double.
Fordham 9, GW 4:Â The Rams tallied seven runs over their final three at-bats to win the first game.
GW rallied from an early 2-0 hole with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, taking the lead 3-2 on Linquist's RBI single with one out in the fourth.
Fordham answered in resounding fashion with three in the top of the fifth and tacked on another in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
GW had its chances with 12 hits from nine different players. Linquist finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Colonials with Marta Fuentes and Sidney Bloomfield also tallying multi-hit efforts.
Lange battled in the circle, pitching her 12th complete game of the season. Just four of the nine runs she allowed were earned.
The do-it-all sophomore from Texas also flashed her speed on the bases with her first career two-steal performance, highlighted by a swipe of home in the third as part of a double steal with Bulanadi.
UP NEXT:Â GW and Fordham close out the series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch at the Vern. The Colonials will be back in action on their home field on Wednesday with a doubleheader vs. Morgan State, starting at 3 p.m.
