Colonials dueled Rams throughout opening weekend of A-10 play
WASHINGTONÂ - George Washington softball dueled Fordham to the final pitch Sunday, dropping a 4-2 decision in the weekend series finale on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Down two runs, the Colonials put a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the seventh before the six-time defending Atlantic 10 champion Rams induced a flyout and a groundout to close out a victory in the rubber game of the first conference series of the spring for both clubs.
Jessica Linquist, Priscilla Martinez and Sidney Bloomfield notched two hits apiece for the Buff and Blue (22-9, 1-2 A-10).
GW jumped on top with a two-out rally in the second inning. With two down, the Colonials strung together three straight singles to plate a pair. Morgan Kummer ripped one back up the middle to score Elena Shelepak, and Bloomfield and Linquist followed with hits of their own to bring Kummer home.
For Linquist, it was her fourth run-scoring hit in the series. The junior from New Jersey now ranks second on the club with 25 RBIs on the season.
GW held the lead into the sixth inning when Fordham scored three times. Madie Aughinbaugh's RBI single evened the game at two before Molly Roark's two-out, two-run double put the Rams in front.
GW had baserunners in six of seven innings, including extra-base hits from Linquist (double in the first) and Bloomfield (triple in the fourth), but couldn't push anything across over the final five frames.Â
In the seventh, the Colonials put the potential tying run on base with one out via Jenna Cone's walk and Sierra Lange's infield single before Aughinbaugh finished out the complete game victory with back-to-back outs.
For GW, Lange tossed her second complete game of the weekend and 14th of the season. The sophomore hurler allowed four runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
UP NEXT:Â GW welcomes Morgan State for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday, starting at 2 p.m. The Colonials will then travel to Saint Joseph's for their first A-10 road series next weekend.
