Colonials entertain Bears at the Vern
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW (22-9) opened its Atlantic 10 schedule last weekend with three tight games vs. Fordham.
The Colonials split a Saturday doubleheader before dropping the rubber game, 4-2, to the Rams, who have won the past six conference titles.
Faith Weber shined in the circle for the Buff and Blue, tossing her first complete game of the season in Saturday's 6-3 victory. The junior right-hander allowed just one earned run and set a season high with four strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the spring.
Jessica Linquist drove in runs in all three games of the series, while Priscilla Martinez reached base in six of her eight plate appearances with four hits and two walks.
ELITE COMPANY:Â GW enters play Wednesday hitting .359 as a team, which ranks third nationally behind only Florida State and Oklahoma.
The Colonials have racked up 311 hits through 31 games, collecting at least seven hits in all but one contest this season. They've reached double figures 17 times, highlighted by a trio of 14-hit efforts.
GW owns the top four individual batting averages in the conference with Sierra Lange (.430), Sidney Bloomfield (.416), Jenna Cone (.412) and Linquist (.402). In addition, Marta Fuentes is sixth at .393.
All five Colonials rank among the top 150 nationally in batting average.
RECORD WATCH:Â After becoming the program's all-time home run leader earlier this season, Cone is poised to take over the top spot for RBIs, as well. The junior from California has driven in 43 runs this season to rank tied for fourth nationally, and she currently sits second on the program's RBI list with 163, seven back of Victoria Valos ('15).
Cone currently ranks first in career batting average (.393) and slugging percentage (.783) and also sits second behind Valos with 77 extra-base hits and third in total bases (321) and runs scored (113).
SCOUTING MORGAN STATE:Â The Bears (7-17) dropped two of three last weekend to Norfolk State to begin their MEAC slate.
Catcher Haylee Bobos (.340, 12 RBI) paces Morgan State at the plate, while Stephanie Rundlett (6.81 ERA) has earned five of its seven wins in the circle.
ON DECK:Â GW kicks off its A-10 road slate with a weekend series at Saint Joseph's. The Colonials are back on the Vern next Wednesday, April 3, for a doubleheader vs. Delaware State before hosting Saint Louis for three games April 6-7.
