Colonials fell to Oakland and Stony Brook on Saturday
WASHINGTONÂ - George Washington softball continued its Buff and Blue Challenge on Saturday, dropping a pair of tight contests on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials were defeated by Oakland, 4-2, before falling to Stony Brook, 6-5, in eight innings to close the day.
Marta Fuentes led the Buff and Blue (20-7) offensively, recording a pair of multi-hit efforts. Jessica Linquist had hits in both contests, including a solo home run in game two.
Oakland 4, GW 2:Â The Colonials produced nine hits but plated just a pair of second-inning runs in Saturday's opener.
GW led 2-0 thanks to an RBI double from Priscilla Martinez and a run-scoring single from Fuentes. The Colonials had five hits in all in the frame.
Oakland answered right back with three runs in the top of the third, taking the lead for good on Brittney Miller's two-out triple. The Golden Grizzlies would add an insurance run in the sixth.
The Buff and Blue put runners on base in each of the final four innings but couldn't push across anything else. Their best chance came in the sixth when they had the tying runs on base when Oakland's center fielder ended the threat with a diving catch.
Fuentes went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and an RBI, while Elena Shelepak supplied two hits, including a double.
Jayme Cone turned in a pair of scoreless innings of relief, striking out the side in the fifth.
Stony Brook 6, GW 5:Â In game two, the Seawolves outlasted the Colonials in extra innings.
With the international tiebreaker in place, Stony Brook was able to score its runner from second in the top of the eighth. The Colonials couldn't match the run as the game ended with a line-drive double play.
Linquist broke a 3-3 deadlock in the fifth with her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot over the right field fence. The lead reached 5-3 on Morgan Kummer's RBI single to score Criza Bulanadi later in the inning.
Stony Brook countered with two runs in the sixth to tie it again and forced extra innings by throwing out a pair of runners at the plate in the seventh.
