Jenna Cone went deep again in Sunday's win
Jenna Cone smacked a pair of extra-base hits, including her team-leading 11th home run of the season, and drove in three runs to stoke the offense, while four pitchers combined to keep the crosstown Hoyas in check.
Following a pair of losses Saturday, the Colonials bounced back with a comfortable victory in their final contest before Atlantic 10 play to improve to 21-7 on the season.
GW seized control Sunday with a four-run third inning thanks to clutch hits from Morgan Kummer and Marta Fuentes. Kummer's two-out single down the left field line brought home a pair, and Fuentes followed with another hit to make it 4-0.
Sidney Bloomfield led off the fourth with her second triple of the season and later scored on a wild pitch. After Jessica Linquist walked, Cone split the left field gap with an RBI double to extend the lead to 6-0.
Cone's amazing run continued with a blast over the left field fence in the sixth to finish the scoring for the Colonials. The two-run shot was her ninth long ball in the past 12 games and pushed her team-leading RBI total to 41 in 28 contests.
Sierra Lange reached three times with a pair of singles and an HBP, while Bloomfield went 2-for-3 with the triple and run scored.
Fuentes went 1-for-2 with a walk to finish out the weekend with a team-best .500 batting average (7-for-14) and also stole her team-leading 18th base.
GW's pitching staff turned in an equally formidable effort with Faith Weber, Kaitlin Buff, Megan Osterhaus and Jayme Cone combining forces in the victory. The defense helped them out, turning a pair of double plays.
Weber started the game with a pair of shutout innings and returned to pitch a scoreless seventh, lowering her season ERA to 2.28 over 23 2/3 innings.Â
Buff earned her second victory of the weekend with an inning of scoreless relief.
Cone entered with the bases loaded in the fourth and escaped the jam with a pair of pair of popouts before pitching two more frames.
