Colonials to play seven games over next five days
The Colonials (18-3) will be back on their home field on the Mount Vernon Campus this weekend, hosting the Buff and Blue Challenge. They're set to welcome Oakland, Stony Brook and Georgetown for the tournament, which runs Friday-Sunday.
The full weekend schedule is available on the Tournament Central page. Check back to GWsports.com and follow @GW_Softball on Twitter for up-to-date information on potential schedule changes.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW went 5-0 last weekend at its Colonial Classic, closing with a thrilling 5-4 win over Manhattan in Sunday's finale.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Jenna Cone smashed a grand slam over the right field fence to put the Colonials in front before Sierra Lange navigated trouble in the seventh to close out her 13th victory of the season.
Cone's homer was her fifth of the weekend and the 37th of her career to take sole possession of the top spot on the program's all-time list. The California native earned national attention as USA Sofball Collegiate Player of the Week and Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week after hitting .636 (14-for-22) with eight extra-base hits in seven victories on the week. She was the first Colonial to win both awards, and she also picked up A-10 Player of the Week honors for the second time this season.
Lange led the Colonials in the circle, compiling a 3-0 mark with a save on the weekend. The sophomore hurler posted a 2.24 ERA over 18 2/3 innings with 21 strikeouts. Her 13 victories are tied for second nationally behind only Tara Trainer of Indiana (16) and put her just three away from GW's single-season record.
OVERWHELMING OFFENSE:Â At the Colonial Classic, GW outscored its opponents 49-21, picking up three wins via run rule. The Buff and Blue hit .405 as a team over the five games to boost their season average to .367, which ranks second in the country behind only defending national champion Florida State (.369). They're also 11th nationally at 6.95 runs per game.
GW has been paced at the plate by Lange, whose .479 batting average continues to lead the A-10. Jessica Linquist (.446) and Cone (.443) are next on the list with Sidney Bloomfield (.377), Elena Shelepak (.345), Marta Fuentes (.344) and Hannah Eslick (.333) also among the top 15 in the league.
FIRST-YEAR PHENOM: Morgan Kummer has fit right in with GW's potent lineup, posting a .484 batting average through her first 31 collegiate at-bats with six RBIs and seven runs scored.
The first-year from Wisconsin continued her strong start last week, collecting at least one hit in all five of her starts. She provided a two-run single in the first inning of Saturday's 10-1 win over Manhattan, and she reached three times with two singles and a hit by pitch in Sunday's 13-5 victory over Canisius.
Defensively, Kummer has been a versatile piece for head coach Shane Winkler, seeing time at both corner outfield spots and behind the plate.
SCOUTING TOWSON:Â Coming off a 42-win season, the Tigers are 6-6 overall after splitting four games at the UNCG Tournament last weekend.
GW will be facing Towson for the first time since the 2013 season.
SCOUTING OAKLAND:Â The Golden Grizzlies improved to 4-7 last weekend by taking two of three in a tournament at Elon. Brittney Miller ranks third nationally in batting average at .576 (19-for-33).
GW is 1-0 all-time against Oakland thanks to a 14-4 run-rule victory on Feb. 23, 2007. The teams were set to meet earlier this season at the Campbell Invitational before rain changed the schedule.
SCOUTING STONY BROOK:Â Inclement weather had limited Stony Brook to just two games prior to last weekend's trip to Florida Atlantic. Four losses in five games there dropped the Seawolves to 1-6 on the season.
This will be GW's first ever matchup vs. Stony Brook.
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN: The crosstown Hoyas (6-17) snapped a five-game losing streak by taking their weekend finale vs. Charleston Southern at the Jacksonville/North Florida Spring Break Challenge.
GW and Georgetown split a pair of games at the season-opening Gardner-Webb Tournament. The Colonials claimed an 11-2 win in five innings Feb. 10, highlighted by a five-RBI effort from Linquist.
ON DECK: GW begins its A-10 slate on March 23-24 with a three-game series at the Vern vs. six-time defending conference champion Fordham.
