Jenna Cone homered twice in game two win
TOWSON, Md. - Jenna Cone continued a remarkable run at the plate with a pair of home runs Wednesday as George Washington softball downed Towson, 10-3, in the second game of a doubleheader at Tiger Softball Stadium.
The Colonials earned a split for the day after falling to the Tigers in the opener, 6-1.
After homering five times last week en route to a pair of national Player of the Week honors, Cone stayed hot against Towson with a solo shot in the fourth that tied the second game and a three-run blast in the seventh to help the Colonials pull away.Â
It was the junior slugger's second multi-home run game of the season and the sixth of her career. She leads the Buff and Blue with nine long balls this spring.
Elena Shelepak and Alessandra Ponce also went deep in the doubleheader for the Colonials, who sit at 19-4 on the season entering this weekend's Buff and Blue Challenge on the Mount Vernon Campus.
GW 10, Towson 3:Â The Colonials found their offensive stride late to beat the Tigers and avoid the sweep.
Down 3-2 in the sixth, GW got a clutch, two-out hit from Priscilla Martinez to take the lead. The junior from California singled to knock in Criza Bulanadi, and Sierra Lange followed her home after an error by the center fielder.
After Jayme Cone tossed a scoreless inning to preserve the one-run lead, the Colonials put the game out of reach with six more in the seventh. They sent 10 batters to the plate thanks to six hits and an error in the frame.
Jessica Linquist drove in the first run with a well-placed bunt single before Jenna Cone added her three-run homer and Shelepak launched her second long ball of the season.
Cone went 2-for-3 with the two homers and a walk and drove in four runs to push her A-10 leading RBI total to 31. Lange, Ponce and Marta Fuentes also recorded two hits apiece as part of a 12-hit attack.
Jayme Cone picked up the win in relief to improve to 3-0. The senior hurler got four outs in the second game without allowing a run after pitching a scoreless inning in the opener.
Towson 6, GW 1:Â The Tigers used a pair of Nicole Stockinger homers and a sterling pitching performance from Julia Smith-Harrington to take game one.
Stockinger's first-inning grand slam staked Towson to a 4-0 lead, and the Tigers added on with Stockinger's solo shot in the third and Kendall Arcia's RBI single in the fourth.
GW had its chances with eight hits but couldn't break through against Smith-Harrington until Ponce's solo home run in the seventh. It was the sophomore from Nevada's second round-tripper of the spring.
Hannah Eslick and Sidney Bloomfield led the Colonials with two hits apiece.
UP NEXT:Â GW welcomes Stony Brook, Oakland and Georgetown for the Buff and Blue Challenge, which begins Friday at the Vern. The Colonials are set for five games over the three days in their final tune-up before Atlantic 10 play.
