Colonials split a doubleheader Friday at the Vern
Jenna Cone went 3-for-3 with a long home run and a career high-tying five RBIs to power the Colonials (20-5) in the second game of the day. Faith Weber returned to the circle after starting the game to earn the save, closing out the victory with the potential tying run at first base.
Earlier, GW fell for the first time this season on its home field with Stony Brook taking a 6-5 victory.
Alessandra Ponce shined in that one, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and a home run to tie the program record for hits in a game. The sophomore from Nevada drove in three runs and scored twice vs. the Seawolves.
GW 8, Oakland 7:Â After falling into an early hole in the second game, the Colonials scored three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to earn a bounce-back victory.
Cone's mammoth two-run homer well over the left field fence and off the roof of Lloyd Gymnasium cut GW's deficit to 3-2 in the third inning. It was her team-leading 10th of the season and eighth in her past nine games.
That was still the score in the fifth when GW pushed across three runs via three hits and an error. Cone tied it with an RBI single scoring Marta Fuentes before Sierra Lange's run-scoring hit gave the Colonials the lead. Elena Shelepak's groundout brought home Jessica Linquist to make it 5-3 in favor of the home team.
GW added on to its advantage with a three-spot in the sixth, highlighted by Cone's two-run single into left. Lange's ensuing sac fly extended the lead to 8-3.
GW needed that cushion when Oakland climbed back in the seventh. The Golden Grizzlies plated three runs before Weber re-entered with a runner on second and one out. The junior hurler induced a pair of groundouts sandwiched around an RBI infield single to secure the victory.
Cone sparked the Colonials with help from Lange (two hits, two RBIs), Linquist (reached three times, scored three runs) and Marta Fuentes (two runs scored).
Kaitlin Buff picked up her second victory of the season with two scoreless innings of relief. Megan Osterhaus also offered a pair of shutout innings in the circle.
Stony Brook 6, GW 5:Â The Colonials had their comeback bid fall just short in the opener.
Stony Brook surged ahead thanks to two-out, bases-loaded triple in the sixth, forcing GW to try to muster a rally. The Colonials put pressure on in the seventh with a one-out double from Ponce followed by a single from Shelepak. They pulled within one on Priscilla Martinez's sac fly, but the Seawolves recorded the final out with a diving catch in left field.
Ponce gave GW a chance with her first career four-hit effort. She supplied an RBI double in the first, a two-run homer in the third and a single in the fifth before her seventh-inning double to the wall in left center.
Lange had three hits and scored three times for the Buff and Blue, while Shelepak and Morgan Kummer also produced multi-hit efforts.
Sierra Lange went the distance in the circle, allowing six runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.Â
UP NEXT:Â The Buff and Blue Challenge continues Saturday with four more games at the Vern. The Colonials are set to face the same two teams, meeting Oakland at 1 p.m. and Stony Brook at 3 p.m. They'll wrap up the weekend Sunday with an 11 a.m. first pitch vs. Georgetown.
