Colonials need win and help to host first round tournament game
WASHINGTON - GW completes the regular season with a trip to Richmond to take on the Spiders on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 11 a.m. with the game streamed live on ESPN+. The Colonials are locked into the No. 8/9 game against Saint Joseph's in Tuesday's first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship. GW needs a win and a Saint Joseph's loss (vs. Fordham) to secure the No. 8 seed and hosting duties.
LAST TIME OUT: The Buff & Blue saw their two-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday, falling 64-53 to Duquesne. Trailing by as many as 13 in the fourth, GW went on an 11-2 run to get within four and had the ball with less than two minutes remaining. The Dukes, though, finished the game on a 9-2 run to escape with the win. Three Colonials reached double figures for the fourth straight game, led by first-year Maddie Loder's 14. Sophomore Neila Luma and senior Kelsi Mahoney added 10 apiece. Luma registered her first double-double of the season (and third of her career) with 10 rebounds on the night. First-year Kayla Mokwuah finished a point shy of her own double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
THE A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Kayla Mokwuah was named the league's rookie of the week on Monday after nearly averaging a double-double in two games last week. The highlight was her performance at Massachusetts Feb. 20 when she notched her first career double-double with 15 points and a team-season-high 16 rebounds while adding four blocks. Mokwuah has played double-digit minutes in each of the last eight games, earned via a renewed effort and intensity in practice. She's reached double figures in four of the last six games, a stretch in which she is averaging 12.2 ppg and 7.3 rpg while shooting 50.8 percent from the floor.
