Colonials earn No. 9 seed in A-10 Tournament, travel to St. Joe's Tuesday
RICHMOND, Va. - Needing a win and some help to secure home court in the first round of next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament, the GW women's basketball team was unable to orcome a hot-shooting Richmond squad in a 56-48 setback Saturday afternoon at the Robins Center.
As a result, the Colonials will travel for their first round matchup with No. 8 seed Saint Joseph's on Tuesday. Tip-off in Philadelphia is set for 3 p.m.
Sophomore Neila Luma was one of two Colonials in double figures, scoring 16 points on 8-of-21 shooting and finishing a rebound shy of her second straight double-double. Senior Mei-Lyn Bautista, who had missed the last two games while in concussion protocol, returned with her typical all-around performance of 10 points, five assists and three steals.
Richmond shot the ball incredibly well on the day, finishing at 45.8 percent for the game, including 60.0 percent (12-of-20) in the second half. The Spiders drilled six 3-pointers in 10 attempts and were led by a trio of players with 10 points each.
GW shot 35.7 percent from the field and hit seven 3s in its own right with three coming from senior Kelsi Mahoney.
The Colonials opened up an early 10-8 lead near the end of the first quarter, but then suffered an eight-minute scoring drought in which Richmond scored 11 straight points to take a 19-10 lead.
GW worked its way back to within six at intermission and started the second half on an 8-2 spurt, accented by a Mahoney triple that cut the deficit to 28-26. Richmond promptly responded with a 13-4 run over the next four minutes to build its largest lead of the game, 41-30.
The Buff & Blue again rallied, closing to within three on two occasions, the last of which came on a Luma layup with 6:38 remaining to make it 47-44. The Colonials could come no closer, though, hitting just two of their final 10 shots as Richmond pulled away for the win.
