Luma leads the way with 13 points and seven rebounds
ST. LOUIS - GW women's basketball saw a tight game at the half slip away Sunday afternoon at Chaifetz Arena, falling 60-44 to Saint Louis.
The Colonials (5-4 A-10) held a 24-23 edge at the break, thanks in part to a six-minute stretch in the second quarter where Saint Louis (5-4 A-10) missed nine straight shots and committed four turnovers. The Buff & Blue turned 10 first-half turnovers from Saint Louis into 10 points in the opening 20 minutes.
After a pair of free throws from sophomore Neila Luma put GW up three to begin the second half, Saint Louis scored nine straight and 12 of the next 14 points to open up a 35-28 lead.
First-year Kayla Mokwuah scored six straight points in the final two minutes of the third quarter before a 3-pointer at the buzzer swung the momentum back to Saint Louis, which took a 43-36 lead into the fourth.
SLU scored nine of the first 11 points in the final frame and held GW without a point for the final 5:32 to pull away with the win.
Luma led GW with 13 points and seven rebounds while Mokwuah provided nine points in 15 minutes off the bench.
After forcing 10 turnovers in the first half, SLU committed just three and shot 50 percent from the floor after halftime. Overall, the Billikens outshot GW 42.6 percent to 37 percent.
Seven-time A-10 Rookie of the Week Ciaja Harbison led three Billikens in double figures with 21 points, 19 of which came after halftime.
GW remains on the road for its next contest, making the quick trip to Fairfax, Va., to battle George Mason on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
