First-years Loder and Mokwuah combine for 20 points
FAIRFAX, Va. - George Washington women's basketball rallied to as close to eight in the fourth quarter at George Mason on Wednesday night at EagleBank arena, but was unable to sustain the run, falling to the Patriots, 61-46.
GW (5-5 A-10) trailed by as many as 19 early in the third quarter, but utilized a 20-9 run to close the gap to 49-41 with nine minutes remaining. First-year Kayla Mokwuah provided the punctuation mark of the spurt with back-to-back paint buckets to get GW within single digits.
The Colonials had multiple chances to cut further into the lead over the next four minutes, but were unable to find the critical shot to keep the run afloat. Instead, George Mason (4-5 A-10) capitalized on a trio of GW turnovers to push the lead back to double figures and pull away for the triumph.
GW relied on Mokwuah and fellow first-year Maddie Loder to contribute nearly half of the team's 46 points. Mokwuah had 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting to reach double figures for the second time this season while Loder added nine points and four boards.
Sophomore Neila Luma neared a double-double with eight points and eight rebounds and forced three steals. Senior Mei-Lyn Bautista played the full 40 minutes for the second straight game, providing seven points, three assists and two rebounds.
In the end, though, the Colonials were unable to contain Mason's Nicole Cardaño-Hillary, who finished with a career-high 37 points on 14-of-23 shooting. The rest of the Patriots were just 8-of-22 from the floor.
Overall, Mason outshot GW 46.7 percent to 33.3 percent and hit seven triples compared to three for the Buff & Blue.
The Colonials will attempt to get back in the win column with a home date on Sunday afternoon against Saint Joseph's. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. in GW's annual Play 4 Kay Pink Game.
