WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball welcomes in Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. for the program's annual #Play4Kay Pink Game. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
PLAY 4 KAY: As part of the annual #Play4Kay initiative, GW is taking part in the Kay Yow Fund's Free Throw Challenge during the month of February. Fans can donate a specific amount for each free throw made or a flat donation, all of which goes toward the fund. The Colonials have connected on 16 free throws so far in their first two games (8.0/game) with five contests remaining.
LAST TIME OUT: GW fell at George Mason, 61-46, on Wednesday. The Colonials clawed back from a 19-point deficit to get within eight early in the fourth, but ultimately weren't able to get any closer. FIRST-YEARS GAINING STEAM: Loder and Mokwuah, GW's first-years, have burst through the proverbial freshman wall, instead surging down the home stretch. In that time, she's averaging 9.9 ppg and shooting 34.7 percent compared to 4.2 ppg and 25.3 percent prior. Mokwuah is averaging 10.0 ppg over her last two games in a combined 32 minutes, two of her best performances of the year. Her growing confidence in the post has shown through by shooting 52.9 percent from the floor (9-17) in the past two contests.
RECORD WATCH: Meanwhile, seniors Mei-Lyn Bautista and Kelsi Mahoney have been steadily climbing the ladder in various school records. Bautista moved into 11th all-time with three assists on Wednesday and is now knocking on the top 10. Entering Sunday...
Bautista needs:
• 2 assists for 10th all-time, 3 for 9th
• 3 3-pointers to move into 7th all-time
Mahoney needs:
• 4 3-pointers for 10th all-time, 5 for 9th
A LOOK AT THE HAWKS: Saint Joseph's snapped a three-game skid its last time out with an impressive 66-54 comeback win over Davidson on Wednesday. The Hawks trailed by as many as 14 early in the third quarter before rallying to win, outscoring the Wildcats 27-6 in the fourth quarter. Saint Joe's has struggled away from home this year, going 1-8 in road games, including an 0-4 mark in A-10 play. Alyssa Monaghan is the team's lone scorer averaging double figures with 14.0 ppg. She paces the league with a 39.3 3-point percentage and is fourth in the circuit with 3.5 assists per game.
