Colonials toss consecutive shutouts for first time since 2017
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball opened up its home campaign with a dominant display on Friday afternoon, dispatching Saint Peter's 20-0 in the opener and 9-0 in the nightcap at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
The consecutive shutouts featured just 12 combined hits allowed in 18 innings from senior Nate Woods, first-year Alex Kobersteen and juniors Jaret Edwards and Andrew Wheeler. It marked the first back-to-back whitewashings since GW blanked Monmouth in both ends of a doubleheader on March 19, 2017.
GW 20, Saint Peter's 0: The Colonials set the tone early with a 10-run home half of the first inning, aided by seven walks and two hit batters. Nine of the runs came with two down, the biggest blow coming off the bat of sophomore Tyler Hix, who smoked a three-run double off the top of the right-center wall to make it 9-0.
Hix had a humongous game at the dish, going 5-for-6 with three doubles, three runs scored and six RBI. In the process, he became the first Colonial to drive in six runs in a game since Kevin Mahala in 2016.
Hix plated his fourth run of the day with an RBI double in the last of the fourth as part of a two-run frame. GW then added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh, before putting up a five-spot in the eighth.
Junior Cal Stalzer, in his first career at-bat, smashed a two-run single to right-center before Hix finished off the scoring with his third run-scoring, two-bagger of the day, driving in two more.
Meanwhile, Woods was dominant on the mound for the second straight week, limiting the Peacocks to just one hit in 7.0 innings, striking out 10. Woods (1-0) has allowed just one earned run in 13.1 innings with 14 strikeouts to open up his senior campaign.
In addition to Hix and Stalzer, juniors Steve Barmakian and Greg Anderberg and senior Dom D'Alessandro each contributed two RBIs.
GW 9, Saint Peter's 0: The Colonials cruised in the nightcap thanks to another outstanding pitching outing, this one from Edwards. The junior matched Woods with seven spotless innings, scattering five hits, walking one and striking out seven.
Edwards danced around traffic during his outing, but held the Peacocks hitless in seven at-bats with runners in scoring position.
A fast start keyed the Colonials offense again, plating two runs in the first inning on an error and an RBI double from first-year Noah Levin.
The score remained 2-0 until GW doubled its cushion in the sixth via another Saint Peter's miscue and a sacrifice fly from first-year Cade Fergus.
The Buff & Blue ended the night with another five-spot in the eighth inning with Anderberg and Hix recording RBIs around a two-run single from Barmakian.
Levin and fellow first-year Logan Doran notched a pair of base knocks in game two while Barmakian scored twice and drove home two runs.
UP NEXT: The Colonials and Peacocks will take Saturday off to avoid expected inclement weather before finishing off the series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
