Colonials look for season sweep of Flyers on ESPNU
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball returns to action after a week off, opening up a two-game road swing by visiting Dayton on Sunday at 12 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
PLAY 4 KAY: As part of the annual #Play4Kay initiative, GW is taking part in the Kay Yow Fund's Free Throw Challenge during the month of February. Fans can donate a specific amount for each free throw made or a flat donation, all of which goes toward the fund. The Colonials have connected on 23 free throws so far in their first three games with four remaining. As of now, each free throw make is worth $25 based on individual contributions. Additionally, GW has raised $1,194 in flat donations and fundraising at home games. At the current pace, GW would donate more than $2,500 to the Kay Yow Fund.
HISTORY VS. DAYTON: GW and Dayton renew acquaintances after the Colonials captured a 46-45 comeback win at the Smith Center on Jan. 12. Trailing by as many as 10 in the first half, GW outscored Dayton 13-5 in the fourth quarter and took the lead on a basket from Chyna Latimer with 2:03 remaining. The Buff & Blue are looking to sweep the season series for the first time since 2015-16 and return the favor after Dayton won both regular season matchups a year ago.
FINDING HER FOOTING: Kayla Mokwuah put up a career-best effort on Sunday against Saint Joseph's, finishing the day with career highs in points (16), field goal makes (7), field goal attempts (16) and minutes played (23). She finished one rebound shy of her career best with five. Mokwuah has played double-digit minutes in each of the last four games, earned via a renewed effort and intensity in practice. She's reached double figures in back-to-back games, and is averaging 12.0 ppg while shooting 48.4% from the floor in the last three contests.
LIV-ENING THINGS UP: Redshirt sophomore Olivia Gumbs was inserted in the second quarter of last Sunday's game and provided quite the spark with nine points and eight rebounds in 17 minutes. Prior to Sunday, Gumbs had played only 21 minutes in conference play with five DNPs, scoring two points and grabbing five rebounds. A LOOK AT THE FLYERS: Dayton comes in having dropped consecutive road games, most recently at VCU, 64-62, on Thursday. The Flyers have shown a stark home/road contrast, winning all five conference home games by an average of 23.4 points while going 2-4 on the road. Jayla Scaife (15.0 ppg) and Lauren Cannatelli (13.2) both average in double figures for the Flyers, but were held to a combined 19 points in the first matchup (Scaife - 14, Cannatelli - 5). Dayton and GW have combined to win the last four A-10 championships with the Colonials earning three crowns to the Flyers' one.
