Women's Basketball Falls Late at Dayton, 62-53

Mokwuah reaches double figures for third straight game, ties career-high with 16
DAYTON, Ohio - GW women's basketball led for over 26 minutes on Sunday afternoon in a hostile environment at UD Arena, showcasing a balanced scoring attack that held the host Flyers on edge for the majority of the contest.
However, Dayton went on a 15-0 run in the final five minutes to overtake the Colonials and pull away for a 62-53 win.
FIrst-year Kayla Mokwuah, who tied her career high with 16 points, put GW up 49-43 with 5:33 remaining with a strong layup against contact. That was the last GW basket until Mokwuah hit another layup with 37 seconds remaining.
In between, the Flyers scored on five straight possessions, taking the lead for good, 51-49, on an Araion Bradshaw 3-pointer with 2:51 left.
Mokwuah was a force for the Colonials inside, reaching double figures for the third straight game. The Longmeadow, Mass., native earned her first career start and made 7-of-9 from the floor, also adding six rebounds, three blocks and three assists.
Senior Kelsi Mahoney knocked down a pair of triples en route to a 13-point effort, also providing four rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Neila Luma gave GW three in double figures with 11 points, seven of which came after halftime.
The nip-and-tuck affair was tied 25-25 at halftime before Dayton moved ahead for the first time early in the third quarter, 33-29. GW responded with a 10-4 run to take a 39-37 lead into the fourth quarter. The game had eight ties and five lead changes, the majority of which came after intermission.
Dayton ended up out-shooting GW 37.0 percent to 35.8 percent, hitting five 3-pointers to the Colonials' four. The Buff & Blue shared the ball incredibly well with 16 assists on 19 made field goals. Eight different players recorded a helper, led by four from senior Anna Savino.
GW is right back out on the road, traveling to Massachusetts on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
