Woods authors quality start, allowing just one earned run in 6.1 frames
NEW ORLEANS -Â GW baseball rallied from a two-run deficit to tie the game with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, only to see Tulane win in walk-off fashion, 3-2, in the bottom half.
The Colonials trailed 2-0 through seven innings despite a tremendous season-opening performance on the mound from senior Nate Woods. The righthander did not yield a baserunner until the fourth inning and ultimately ceded only two runs (one earned) in 6.1 frames. Woods allowed two hits and struck out four without walking a batter.
GW was able to take its starter off the hook by battling back to even the game at two. First-year Cade Fergus tripled to lead off the eighth and cut the lead in half when he scored on a double-play ball.
In the ninth, back-to-back two-out walks set the stage for redshirt sophomore Colin Brophy, who delivered the game-tying single to left field.Â
Tulane worked around a double play in the ninth, one of four spun by GW on the evening, to win the game thanks to a two-out double and a subsequent throwing error.
Of GW's six hits on the evening, four came from newcomers. Fergus' triple was the lone extra-base hit on the night for the Buff & Blue.Â
The Colonials and Green Wave continue the three-game series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
