Five Colonials reach double figures in 78-67 road triumph
HAMDEN, Conn. - GW women's basketball showcased a balanced and prolific offensive attack on Saturday afternoon at Quinnipiac, then relied upon its trademark defense to earn its fourth straight victory, 78-67, at People's United Center.
The Buff & Blue had one of the best offensive days in four years under Jen Rizzotti, shooting 52.9% from the floor, the best since Feb. 4, 2017. GW's 78 points were also the most since Dec. 12, 2017.
Balance was the name of the game with five different Colonials reaching double figures, doing so for the first time since Nov. 27 of last season. Redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke once again led the way, matching her output from Wednesday with 22 points (4-6 3-pointers), four rebounds and three assists.
Classmate Mayowa Taiwo was dominant on both ends of the floor, registering her first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Graduate student Alexandra Maund, playing in front of a large cheering section after playing her undergraduate career down the road at Yale, had her best day in the Buff & Blue with 14 points (6-8 FG) and five boards.
First-year Faith Blethen chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, and sophomore Maddie Loder served the role of closer with seven of her 11 points coming in the final frame.
Much like Wednesday's comeback win at Delaware, the Colonials started slow, falling behind by 11 in the opening quarter, 22-11, before embarking on a 12-4 run to close within 26-23 two minutes into the second quarter. Quinnipiac bumped the lead back to 10, 36-26, but GW was right there to respond and tie the game with 10 straight of its own, nine of which came from Hyduke.
Trailing by one at intermission, GW ratcheted up its defense, limiting Quinnipiac to an eye-popping 1-of-18 shooting in the third quarter. While holding the Bobcats without a FG for 9:27, the Colonials turned a 43-40 deficit into a 58-49 advantage with nine minutes left.
GW eventually extended the lead to as many 15, 72-57, and put the game away at the free throw line, connecting on 17-of-27 at the stripe on the day.
Now 6-3 on the year, GW has one more test before a break for final exams, returning home to take on Minnesota on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The first 100 GW students in attendance will receive free pizza and coffee and have a chance to win a GW prize pack as part of the Finals Break promotion.
