Hyduke leads Colonials for third straight game with 13 points
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball entered play Tuesday night against Minnesota as the winners of four straight games, in the process moving to three games above .500 at 6-3, a high-water mark not seen since the NCAA Tournament run two seasons ago. Like last season, and the team that went dancing in 2017-18, this season's early slate was packed with some of the country's best teams. On Tuesday, the Gophers showed that they belong in that group.
After also taking defeats vs. Princeton, who owns a national RPI of 5, at Maryland (#13 in the AP poll), and again on the road at Lehigh (RPI 87), the Buff and Blue once again tested itself against a Power 5 foe, but came up short, 83-50.
Minnesota was receiving votes in both national polls and only enhanced its case to be ranked in a wire-to-wire win. The Gophers led 23-13 after the first quarter and 49-22 at halftime.
Reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week Tori Hyduke led the way once again for GW with 13 points, while sophomore Kayla Mokwuah finished with 12.
Led by the sharpshooting of Destiny Pitts, who connected on 6-of-9 from behind the 3-point line, and Sara Scalia (game-high 23 points, 4-of-6 3pt. FG), Minnesota found comfy rims in the Smith Center. The visitors made 13-of-25 three-pointers overall (.520) to render the game's late stages time for both teams to work on their depth.
GW now gets a break in terms of rest, but not in terms of quality of opposition, as James Madison invades the Smith Center next. The Dukes currently own an RPI of 72 and are receiving votes in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches poll. Game time vs. JMU is 7 p.m. on Dec. 20th, live on ESPN+.
