Colonials return to action after nine-day break for exams
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball wraps up a busy weekend with its second game in three days, traveling across town to face American on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
YOUTH MOVEMENT: GW's four first-years have had to shoulder the load more than any other group in the A-10 so far. The group of Faith Blethen, Essence Brown, Tori Hyduke and Mayowa Taiwo lead all A-10 rookie classes in percentage of team minutes played (46.5%) and rebounding (41.6%) while ranking second in scoring (44.3%) behind only La Salle (47.8%).
HY OCTANE OFFENSE: Redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke was named the Atlantic 10's Rookie of the Week and College Sports Madness' A-10 Player of the Week on Dec. 9 following an incredible two-game road stretch. Hyduke posted a pair of 22-point performances at Delaware and Quinnipiac, also averaging 3.0 rpg, 2.5 spg and 2.0 apg while shooting 56% from the floor and 60% from beyond the arc.
Hyduke is currently the third-best first-year 3-point shooter in the nation, and 32nd overall, at 45.3%. Her 12.9 points per game rank second among A-10 freshman and 12th overall in the league.
IN RARIFIED AIR: Tori Hyduke reached double figures for the ninth time in her first 11 career games with 10 points on Friday, a nearly unprecedented accomplishment for a first-year performer in program annals.
Hyduke is the first Colonial to do so since Caira Washington in 2016-17, and more impressively, she is the first GW rookie to reach double figures in nine of her first 11 games since Hall of Famer Elisa Aguilar accomplished the feat in her first 11 games in 1996-97. Aguilar, who was a sophomore academically that year like Hyduke, was ultimately named the A-10 Co-Rookie of the Year for a team that went to the Elite 8.
EXTRA INSIGHTS: The NCAA RPI report, released for the first time this season last week, highlights the Colonials' efforts against a strong schedule once again. GW has ranked as high as 82nd in the index and sits 106th in Saturday's release, fourth-best in the A-10. Of the five A-10 teams with better records than the Buff & Blue at the moment, only one (Saint Louis) has faced a tougher slate.
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES: American is 3-6 on the year following a 59-55 road win at Radford on Sunday. Like GW, the Eagles have also defeated Villanova and fallen to Minnesota on the young year. The Colonials are the third A-10 team on AU's schedule with the Eagles having previously fallen to George Mason (73-55) and Saint Joseph's (72-51).
Jade Edwards and Kaitlyn Marenyi form a formidable duo, accounting for 48.3% of the team's scoring at 17.2 and 11.4 points per game, respectively. Overall, the Eagles average 59.3 ppg and shoot 40% from the floor. AU is coming off a 22-11 season in which they tied for the Patriot League regular season crown before ultimately advancing to the WNIT.
