Hyduke drops in career-high 22 in runaway triumph
NEWARK, Del. - A career night from redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke and a stifling second half defensive effort helped lead GW women's basketball to its third straight win, 63-49, at Delaware on Wednesday night.
The three-game winning streak has been highlighted by stalwart defense with the Colonials holding their last three opponents below 50 points and to an average of 44.3 points per game.
Following a difficult opening 10 minutes in which the Blue Hens shot 54.5% and scored 21 points, the Buff & Blue's defense locked in and limited UD to 31.4% shooting and just 28 points the rest of the way.
The early onslaught put the Colonials down 19-9 with 2:44 remaining in the opening stanza, but GW's offense came to life on Hyduke's first 3-pointer of the game, spurring a 22-7 run over the next 10 minutes to jump in front, 31-26.
Five straight points from sophomore Kayla Mokwuah accented a 9-0 run to surge the Colonials into the lead for good as the Buff & Blue entered halftime with a 33-32 lead.
Hyduke, who had 10 first-half points, drilled a triple on the opening possession, one of a career-high five trifectas en route to a team-high 22 points on the night. The Fair Haven, N.J., native became the first Colonial to cross the 20-point threshold this season.
GW entered the fourth with a slim 49-45 edge, but completely shut down the Blue Hen attack in the final frame to the tune of four points and eight turnovers.
A long ball from Hyduke and an aggressive layup from graduate student Alexandra Maund, who was appearing for the first time since Nov. 10, pushed the lead to nine, which was more than enough for the Buff & Blue.
The Colonials held Delaware without a point for the final 5:23 of the game, scoring the final nine points to pull away with the 14-point triumph.
Hyduke was joined in double figures by graduate student Ariel Stephenson, who chipped in a season-high 13, including a perfect 6-6 showing at the free throw line. Maund added eight points and two rebounds in 15 minutes of action.
GW posted season-bests in field goal percentage (45.7) and rebounding margin (+11) while also taking advantage of 20 turnovers that turned into 26 points on the offensive end.
The Colonials will look for their fourth straight win, and fourth win in six games away from the Smith Center, in their next matchup on Saturday at Quinnipiac. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
