Colonials aim for third straight victory
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball begins a two-game trek with a trip to Delaware on Wednesday night. Tip-off at the Bob Carpenter Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Colonials and Blue Hens are squaring off for just the fifth time in program history and for the first time since 2002.
LAST TIME OUT: GW's defense was on full display in its latest outing against Coppin State, thrashing the Eagles to the tune of a 54-35 victory on Sunday at the Smith Center. The Colonials' defense stole the show by forcing 28 Coppin State turnovers that led to 29 points. The Buff & Blue also set defensive season bests in nine different categories including opposing field goal percentage (28.9%), points (35) and field goals allowed (13).
HOMECOMING: Redshirt junior forward Olivia Gumbs grew up in Newark and attended St. Andrew's School in Middletown. Her father, Oliver (OJ) Gumbs, played in 74 games for UD from 1984-88.
ROUNDING INTO FORM: Sunday's matchup was the second straight stalwart defensive performance for the Colonials, following a 52-49 victory against Georgetown the week prior. Over the last two games, GW is holding its opponents to 42.0 points per game on 29.2% shooting overall and 11.4% beyond the arc.
Coppin State's 35 points were the fewest allowed in the Jen Rizzotti era (since 2016) and marked the program's best effort since February 2015 vs. Davidson. The 28.9% opposing field goal percentage was the best since Jan. 1 last season against Memphis (24.0%).
FOR STARTERS...: Sophomore Kayla Mokwuah poured in 10 points on Sunday to reach double digits for the third straight game, a run that has coincided with her move into the starting lineup at Memphis (Nov. 17). Mokwuah is averaging 8.2 ppg and 4.8 rpg in the last four games, all starts, continuing a trend from last year.
In 10 career starts, including the final six games of her freshman season, Mokwuah is averaging 9.4 ppg and 6.3 rpg when starting compared to 5.7 ppg and 3.0 rpg off the bench.
A LOOK AT THE BLUE HENS: Delaware is 2-4 on the year but rides a two-game winning streak that has coincided with the return of 2018 CAA Player of the Year Nicole Enabosi, who missed all of last year and the first four games this season while recovering from an ACL injury. Enabosi, who was named the CAA Player of the Week on Monday, scored a career-high 32 in an overtime win against Santa Clara on Saturday and is averaging 22.5 ppg in her first two games back.
Jasmine Dickey has been leading the Blue Hens in Enabosi's absence, averaging 13.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg. UD was slated to finish fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association and is one of three CAA foes on the docket this month for GW (James Madison, William & Mary).
