Colonials open up conference play on Saturday at George Mason
WASHINGTON - In the non-conference finale for GW women's basketball, the Tribe from William & Mary visited D.C. with the Colonials looking to secure a winning record entering Atlantic 10 play. After already facing four opponents this season ranked in the top-40 of the NCAA's RPI, GW had to deal with one of the nation's best offenses Sunday, with the Tribe entering play as the nation's top free throw shooting team, and ranked 26th in assists per game.
William & Mary came to the District with an 8-2 record, with seven of its eight wins by double digits, including a 69-55 victory at A-10 preseason favorite VCU on Dec. 8. The Tribe's top gun, Eva Hodgson, took to the floor for W&M with an 18.2 ppg scoring average, while shooting at 54% from the field, 42% from deep and 98% from the free throw line (#1 in the NCAA), and she lived up to the billing.
GW clung to a 43-42 lead entering the final frame, only to see William & Mary take its first lead of the game at 46-45 early in the fourth. Hodgson saved her best for the end and put GW away with a 16-point fourth quarter, including a 5-of-6 effort from the floor, 3-of-3 behind the arc, and 3-of-4 at the charity stripe in the session, to lead all scorers in the game with 23 points. William & Mary's other double-digit scorer on the season, Victoria Reynolds, dropped 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting as the Tribe recorded 18 assists on 22 made field goals.
The Colonials vaulted out to a 9-0 lead and kept the Tribe at bay throughout the first. After a quarter that saw GW connect at a 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the floor, the Buff and Blue led 20-12 after one. Sydney Zambrotta led the way with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the first, to get GW off to the quick start. GW nudged its lead up a point at the half, and entered intermission leading 33-24. As the conference's top 3-point shooting team, the home club banged five triples in the first half, at a stellar .556 clip, only to cool off in the second half with a single triple.
Three Colonials hit double-figures in the contest, Zambrotta (11), grad transfer Alexandra Maund (10) and rookie Tori Hyduke (10), who has now scored 10+ points in 10 of her first 13 career games.
GW wraps non-conference play at 6-7, and concludes the decade with a 169-142 mark in the 2010s. The Colonials won three A-10 regular season and tournament titles in the decade, advancing to three NCAA Tournaments and two WNITs.
With the non-conference slate now complete, the Colonials turn their attention to the rigors of A-10 play. GW opens conference competition Saturday at Revolutionary Rival George Mason at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
