Colonials battle Revolutionary Rival at 2 p.m. Saturday
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball opens up league play with a short jaunt to its Revolutionary Rival, George Mason, on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Colonials are opening A-10 play on the road for the fifth time in six years with last year's home matchup against Fordham serving as the lone exception.
WELCOME TO LEAGUE PLAY: The Buff & Blue were projected to finish seventh in the A-10, just one spot behind George Mason in the preseason poll. The teams were separated by just two points in the poll.
A founding member of the A-10, GW has posted a 386-175 (.688) record in 35 seasons in the league. The Colonials boast winning records against 12 of 13 current A-10 foes.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF: The NCAA RPI report has highlighted the Colonials' efforts against a strong schedule once again after the team faced the 37th-toughest non-conference schedule in 2018-19.
This year, GW encountered seven teams that won regular season and/or tournament league titles last year. The end result was the third-toughest non-conference slate among A-10 teams, ranking 52nd nationally. A positive byproduct of the challenge is an RPI of 108, the fourth-highest in the league.
EXPERIENCE PAYS OFF: Graduate student Alexandra Maund posted double figures for the fourth time this season against William & Mary, reaching the mark for the third time in her last five games (9.4 ppg in that stretch). The Yale transfer has been as advertised and then some for GW, currently averaging career highs in points (9.1), rebounds (4.4) and minutes per game (21.6).
DIVING RIGHT IN: GW was given no gifts by the schedule makers to open up A-10 play, facing four of the top six teams in the league's preseason poll in the first five affairs, three of which are on the road. The only game not against a top-six preseason team is next Wednesday vs. Duquesne, which tied for the league's best non-conference mark at 10-3.
The Colonials are looking to start 1-0 in league play for the first time since 2016-17.
A LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS: George Mason has had a similar road to its 6-7 non-conference mark as GW but is coming off a last-second 59-58 win at SMU on New Year's Eve. GW and GMU have two opponents in common in American and Delaware, with opposite results as GW topped Delaware and Mason bested American.
The Patriots' story begins and ends with reigning A-10 Player of the Year, Nicole Cardaño-Hillary, who leads the league with 17.9 points per game while taking the sixth-most shots in the nation (223). Cardaño-Hillary had a career-high 37 points in last year's matchup at EagleBank Arena. Jacy Bolton (10.9 ppg) and Camarie Gatling (10.1) also average double digits for the Patriots who enter league play seventh in the A-10 in offense and 12th in defense.
