Colonials host William & Mary at 2 p.m.
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball returns to action with its final non-conference game of the season on Sunday afternoon against William & Mary. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
NON-CONFERENCE NUGGETS: A win on Sunday would give GW its first above-.500 non-conference record since the 2016-17 season (8-5) in Jen Rizzotti's first year on campus. GW has won six straight non-conference finales, including a 51-38 victory over Memphis last season.
William & Mary is the third CAA team on the Buff & Blue's docket this year. The Colonials have already won at Delaware (63-49, Dec. 4) and fallen to James Madison (69-50, Dec. 20).
THE DECADE THAT WAS: GW has compiled a 169-141 mark (.545) in the 2010s, including an 86-66 record (.566) in A-10 play. The Colonials won three A-10 regular season and tournament titles in the decade, advancing to three NCAA Tournaments and two WNITs.
MAKING HER MOVE: Sophomore Kayla Mokwuah posted a new career high with 18 points on Sunday at American, doing so with an efficient 9-of-13 day from the field. She has surged since a 10-point effort at Maryland (Nov. 20), having now reached double figures five times in her last eight games and averaging 9.8 ppg and 5.3 rpg during the stretch.
Mokwuah has shown a great progression in her second year at the college level, increasing her scoring production by 27% (6.5 to 8.3), rebounding by 38% (3.7 to 5.1) and field goal percentage by four percent to a team-best 50.6%.
THREE'S COMPANY: GW continues to lead the A-10 with its 35.1% shooting from beyond the arc despite a recent 11-for-40 (27.5%) drought over the last three games. The season-long mark is on pace to be the best for the Buff & Blue since the 2006-07 squad shot 38.6% from beyond the arc. The Colonials have bagged at least five 3s in each of their six victories while being held to four or fewer in four of the six setbacks.
A LOOK AT THE TRIBE: William & Mary has roared to an 8-2 start with seven of its eight wins by double digits so far this year, including a 69-55 victory at A-10 preseason favorite VCU on Dec. 8. The Tribe have been off since a 65-56 triumph against Norfolk State on Dec. 20. Eva Hodgson paces W&M with 18.2 ppg, shooting at 54% from the field, 42% from deep and 98% from the free throw line (#1 in the NCAA).
The Tribe have a top-100 offense nationally and excel at sharing the ball with 16.9 assists per game, 26th best in the NCAA. Victoria Reynolds (13.2 ppg) is lone other W&M player to average double digits, combining with Hodgson to account for 44% of the team's offense so far this year.
