Colonials return home next Sunday to host William & Mary
WASHINGTON - Sophomore Kayla Mokwuah poured in a career-high 18 points on Sunday afternoon at Bender Arena, but GW women's basketball was unable to slow down a hot-shooting American squad in a 66-53 setback.
Mokwuah showcased an efficient post game, making nine of her 13 field goal attempts while also pulling down seven rebounds, one shy of a season best. The shorthanded Colonials, playing with just nine active players, saw eight different players score in the contest and shot 44.4% overall.
However, the Buff & Blue were unable to slow down the Eagles on the other end of the floor as AU shot 66.7% in the first half and 51% for the game, drilling 10 3-pointers to hold off any rally GW put together.
The Colonials found themselves trailing by 10 in the middle stages of the second quarter before Mokwuah scored eight points in a three-minute stretch to bring GW within one, 32-31.
American scored the final six points of the half to take a seven-point lead into the locker room, and GW never was able to make a dent in the deficit after intermission.
Kaitlyn Marenyi led a trio of Eagles in double figures with 16 points, 13 of which came prior to intermission on the back of four 3-pointers.
GW returns to action in a week's time for its final non-conference game of the season, welcoming in William & Mary next Sunday for a 2 p.m. tip.
