Hurtado and Skelly join Colonials in Castille's second recruiting class
WASHINGTON - GW men's tennis coach Rob Castille announced the signing of Gabe Hurtado and Garrett Skelly as the team's Class of 2024 recruiting class on Wednesday.
"I'm excited to welcome Gabe and Garrett to the GW family," Castille said. "First off, they are both quality guys. We currently have a team where we emphasize character so that was important to us, and we want to make sure we bring in guys that fit that mold.
"Secondly, both are very professional in the way they conduct themselves, both on and off the court. They take their training very seriously without neglecting their academics and are committed to being great students.
"Thirdly, they have both played at a high level for several years, and the experience of playing in big matches will benefit them tremendously at the collegiate level. We are thrilled that they will be joining us next fall, and I'm confident they will be great additions to the team and University!"
Hurtado, who was born in Bogota, Colombia, comes to GW from Club Med Academies in Port St. Lucie, Fla. While there, he earned the hardest worker award on the team for three straight years and currently ranks among the Top 350 in the ITF Junior Ranking. He intends to pursue a master's degree in Sport Management at GW.
Skelly hails from The Woodlands, Texas where he is a two-time Most Outstanding Player at The Woodlands High School. This year, he won the district and regional 6A singles titles and was a state semifinalist, ranking as the #3 player in the state. In 2018, Skelly won the district and regional 6A doubles title, advancing to the state quarterfinals. He intends to major in Business at GW.
Next fall, the duo will join a program that has made great strides in the Atlantic 10 ranks since Castille came aboard. The Colonials start their 2020 championship season on Jan. 18 against BYU.
