Mokwuah reaches double figures for third straight contest
WASHINGTON - With a week off during the Thanksgiving week, the George Washington women's basketball team returned to the Charles E. Smith Center on Sunday to host Coppin State, having last played last Sunday in a win over District rival Georgetown.
Perhaps still feeling the effects of the tryptophan, the Colonials didn't explode out of the gate, but when they did, it came with the fire of a frozen turkey dunked into the fryer. GW used an 11-0 run over a span of 4:41 of game clock that closed the first quarter, to turn a 10-7 deficit into an 18-10 lead, and from there the Buff and Blue didn't look back.
The GW 'D' then pitched a shutout for the first 9:03 of the second, to see its lead swell to 32-10, and the 17-point halftime lead was never close to threatened for the duration of the game. The home squad's 32-15 lead at intermission was fueled by a scoreless stretch of nearly 14 minutes from the Eagles, and in all a 28-2 spurt by GW virtually ended this one before it was halfway over.
An uneventful second half saw the Colonials eke out a 22-20 margin in the game's last two stanzas, with the game all but decided before the break.
GW featured a balanced offensive effort with nine individuals scoring between four and 10 points. Sophomore Kayla Mokwuah led all scorers with 10 points as the only student-athlete on either side to hit double digits. The center from Massachusetts also led GW in rebounds with eight.
Turnovers told the story as Coppin State coughed up the rock 28 times, which led to 29 GW points on the other end. The Colonials' sticky fingers were a problem for the Eagles as seven players had multiple pilfers in the contest and the team registered 16 steals total. Coppin State was also held to a .289 field goal percentage and the 35 points were the fewest allowed by GW in coach Jennifer Rizzotti's four years at the helm.
For GW, Lexus Levy and Mayowa Taiwo both registered a +17 +/- ratio, both of which came in relatively short minutes, with Taiwo logging 17:45 on the floor and Levy registering 17:15 of action, to make their presence felt off the bench.
GW now hits the road for two games, starting Wednesday night at Delaware at 7 p.m. The Buff & Blue also visit Quinnipiac next Saturday, Dec. 7th at 2 p.m., in a Homecoming of sorts for Rizzotti in her home state of Connecticut, before returning home on Dec. 10th to host Big Ten foe Minnesota at 7 p.m.
