Colonials go for 800th win in program history at 2 p.m. on Military Appreciation Day
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball returns to the Smith Center for just its second home game of the season, welcoming District rival Georgetown for a 2 p.m. tip on Sunday. The Colonials and Hoyas are meeting for the 37th time overall and renewing acquaintances after playing in six of seven years prior to not facing each other last season.
LAST TIME OUT: Four Colonials reached double figures at Maryland Wednesday, a season high. Redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke bombed in four 3-pointers to accrue a team-best 12 points. First-year Faith Blethen, sophomore Kayla Mokwuah and graduate student Ariel Stephenson each chipped in 10 points a piece.
HISTORY IN THE MAKING: Sunday's contest represents GW's second opportunity to earn its 800th win in program history following #799 at Memphis last Sunday. The Buff & Blue would join a prestigious group of 62 other programs that have secured at least 800 wins in their history and would be the third A-10 team to do so behind Dayton and St. Joe's.
BRING YOUR 'A' GAME: Stephenson has been a welcome boon for the Colonials in her two games since returning from injury. Despite not being up to full game speed yet, Stephenson has pitched in 18 points with four assists and three rebounds.
Most notably, Stephenson has made those around her better with a team-best plus-minus of +4 in the last two games. Her +18 at Memphis is the best individual performance in the metric by a Colonial this year.
DIGGING DEEP FOR DOUBLE DIGITS: The Colonials possessed a balanced attack at #9/10 Maryland on Wednesday, putting four in double figures for the first time since five players did so in a 76-63 win over Towson on Nov. 27, 2018.
So far this season, GW has had 14 double-digit efforts from eight different players. Exactly half of those performances have come from Hyduke (4) and Blethen (3). Overall, 11 of the 14 games with at least 10 points have come from a new addition to this year's roster.
A LOOK AT THE HOYAS: Georgetown is 1-3 on the season following a 66-59 loss to James Madison on Thursday. The Hoyas' lone win came last Saturday at Pitt, 66-56. GU is coming off its fourth consecutive postseason appearance, advancing to the WNIT quarterfinals as part of a 19-16 season a year ago. Similar to the Colonials, Georgetown is counting upon the production of a graduate transfer to support the squad with fifth-year Taylor Barnes, a Memphis transfer, leading the way with 10.0 ppg.
James Howard is in his third year as the Hoyas' bench boss and is charged with replacing the top three scorers from a year ago for a team that was projected to finish 10th in the BIG EAST.
