Hyduke drops in career-high 14 in triumph
WASHINGTON - The eyes of the D.C. sports fan were on the Charles E. Smith Center on Sunday afternoon as two District foes battled through a physical contest with bodies hitting the floor regularly. The host George Washington Colonials saw the Georgetown Hoyas invade Foggy Bottom, and were sure to send them back on their short bus ride home unhappy.
It wasn't an easy task though as teams fought through nine ties and four lead changes to decide it. At winning time, the Colonials turned to grad transfer and DMV native Ariel Stephenson to secure the win. After returning to D.C. in the offseason with more than 1,000 points in her career at Wake Forest, Stephenson had the ball in her hands in a tie game, 47-47, with less than two minutes to go. She cooly rose up for a midrange jumper and buried it to give GW a two-point lead with 1:39 to go. Georgetown then equalized on the other end, but Stephenson's clutch free throw with 45 ticks lift provided the final lead change, and redshirt freshman Mayowa Taiwo iced it with a layup with :02 to go after two defensive stops on the other end.
GW started on an 8-0 run keyed by the young guns, with first-year Faith Blethen netting the game's first five points and redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke forcing an early Hoyas' timeout after following Blethen's 3-pointer with a triple of her own. The GW 'D' held Georgetown without a make on eight first quarter three-point attempts, to bring the opening stanza to a close with GW holding a 16-10 advantage.
The second started with a mini-Hoyas' spurt, with the visitors starting the quarter on a 11-2 run to take a 21-18 advantage, before Hyduke hit again from long range to knot the score at blackjack. Going into the break, Hyduke neared her career-high scoring mark with 10, despite the visitors holding just a bucket lead, 27-25.
Hyduke hit her career-high in the third and finished with a game-high 14 points (3-of-5 3s). She also stirred the Colonials' drink all game in her 35:01 of court time, as she finished with +11 +/- ratio in the tight ballgame that saw neither side lead by double digits at any point. Hyduke also trailed only Taiwo (8) for team-high rebounding honors with seven.
The Hoyas went on to finish 1-of-20 from distance, the lone make coming from Briana Jones, who also led Georgetown with 12 points.
The Buff & Blue now take Thanksgiving week off from competition before returning to the Charles E. Smith Center a week from today for a 2 p.m. tip against Coppin State.
