Colonials hold their own against one of the nation's top teams
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - GW women's basketball starred down one of the nation's best teams on Wednesday night, and learned valuable lessons for the rest of season the season ahead in an 88-54 setback at #9/10 Maryland.
Following an opening blitz from the Terrapins, GW steadied itself and shot over 40 percent in the final 30 minutes against a team that was holding opponents to 35% shooting on the year.
Four Colonials posted double figures, marking the most in a single contest this year. Redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke led the way with 12 points by way of four trifectas, and reached double digits for the fourth time in five games to begin her career.
First-year Faith Blethen chipped in 10 points to reach double figures for the third time in her young career while sophomore Kayla Mokwuah and graduate student Ariel Stephenson poured in 10 apiece in season-high efforts.
GW continued its shooting prowess from behind the arc, hitting 7-of-16 from deep to overcome early shooting woes. The Buff & Blue also battled on the boards, ripping down 14 offensive boards that led to 12 second chance points.
Maryland led for the entirety of the contest, after jumping out to a 23-7 edge after the first quarter. The Colonials cut the lead to 12 in the second quarter by virtue of a 10-2 run that ended with a Hyduke triple.
Stephenson and Mokwuah combined for 10 points in the third frame before Blethen led the way with five points in the fourth. Fellow first-year Essence Brown laid in her first career field goal in the frame as one of nine different Colonials to score in the effort.
With a road-heavy slate in the rear view mirror, GW now returns to the Smith Center for a pair of home games around the Thanksgiving holiday. The first matchup comes Sunday at 2 p.m. against District rival Georgetown on Military Appreciation Day.
