Colonials look to remain perfect all-time against the Tigers
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball's three-game road trip is set to take a Southern swing as the Colonials travel to take on Memphis this Sunday. Tip-off from Elma Roane Fieldhouse is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET.
LAST TIME OUT: A valiant fourth quarter comeback attempt that featured a quartet of 3-pointers fell just shy for GW in a 59-53 setback at Lehigh on Wednesday. The Colonials had their best shooting day of the year (44.4%), but fell victim to 27 turnovers. Redshirt junior Sydney Zambrotta led the Buff & Blue with 18 points with redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke chipping in 13.
HY HOPES: Hyduke has impressed in her first three career games, reaching double figures in all three affairs. After missing last year due to a preseason knee injury, Hyduke has been as advertised after coming in to GW as the #27 guard in her high school class per ESPN.com.
Hyduke is one of just two first-year student-athletes in the A-10 to reach double figures in each of her first three games (Rachel Kent, Saint Louis, 13.7 ppg).
HOME ON THE ROAD: Zambrotta has found comfort away from the Smith Center this year, resetting her career high in scoring in both games. She spearheaded the Colonials at Villanova with 17 points before rallying a fourth quarter charge on Wednesday at Lehigh to finish with a team-high 18.
In two years at Louisville, Zambrotta scored 57 total points in 18 true road games. She reached double figures just once away from home, scoring 10 points in a Feb. 2017 contest at Wake Forest, a game that featured current Colonial grad transfer Ariel Stephenson playing for the Demon Deacons.
OUTSIDE THE LINES: GW hit a season-high seven 3-pointers at Lehigh on Wednesday, four of which came from Zambrotta in the second half. The Colonials were rather efficient in that regard, shooting 53.8 percent from deep to improve their 3-point shooting to an A-10 leading 41.0 percent.
Hyduke and Zambrotta have been the catalysts from deep, combining for 11 of the team's 16 makes and 29 of the 39 attempts through three games.
A LOOK AT THE TIGERS: Memphis is 1-2 on the year following an 83-74 setback at Louisiana Tech on Wednesday. The Tigers have dropped two in a row overall after topping Alcorn State, 57-51, in the season opener. U of M is headlined by Jamirah Shutes who peppers the American and NCAA leaderboards. Shutes, who was held to 9 points on 4-of-14 shooting in D.C. last year, is eighth in the AAC with 18.3 points per game and fourth with 5.3 assists per contest. Lanetta Williams has blocked eight shots this year to rank 15th in the nation and tops in the circuit.
