Colonials overcome 11-point second half deficit in thrilling triumph
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - GW women's basketball found itself trailing by one with 2.0 seconds left on Sunday morning in Memphis, but a beautifully drawn up and executed play pushed the Colonials ahead in an exhilarating 64-63 win.
Inbounding from the sideline, first-year Faith Blethen lobbed a perfect pass to the right block where redshirt freshman Mayowa Taiwo elevated to catch the pass, contorted her body against contact and delicately laid the ball in with 0.9 seconds left, setting off an exuberant celebration on the GW bench. Memphis' half-court heave drew nothing but air to seal the win.
Taiwo's lay-in was the third lead change in the final 8.4 seconds and the 11th overall in the game. GW had the ball down 61-60 when graduate student Ariel Stephenson, making her Buff & Blue debut, was fouled and calmly drilled a pair of free throws. On the other end, Memphis scored a second-chance basket to briefly give the home team a one-point advantage that was erased by Taiwo's heroics.
The final flurry was only made possible by GW overcoming an 11-point deficit midway through the third quarter. Trailing 45-34 with 6:49 to go in the third, GW embarked on an elongated 25-9 run over the next 12 minutes to climb ahead 59-54 with five minutes remaining.
Sophomore Maddie Loder was the catalyst during the comeback, scoring eight of her career-high 18 points in the spurt. The Orono, Minn., native was sensational in her first start of the year, dishing out a career-best seven assists in 37 minutes to lead three Colonials in double figures.
Junior Neila Luma flirted with a double-double, contributing 11 points and eight boards while Blethen added 10 points. Taiwo and Stephenson chipped in eight points apiece, including the final four points of the contest.
GW will now look to improve on the good feelings with a challenging matchup on Wednesday against No. 8 Maryland in College Park. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
