Colonials and Terrapins square off at 7 p.m. Wednesday
WASHINGTON - George Washington finishes its longest road trip of the year (three games) with a clash against No. 9/10 Maryland on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in College Park, Md.
LAST TIME OUT: GW is coming off a thrilling last-second win at Memphis on Sunday, besting the Tigers on a lay-up from Mayowa Taiwo with 0.9 seconds remaining off an out-of-bounds lob pass from Faith Blethen. Taiwo's acrobatic lay-in was the third lead change in the final 8.4 seconds of the game, and 11th overall. The Colonials trailed by as many as 11 mid-way through the third quarter.
HISTORY AGAINST TOP 10 TEAMS: GW is set to play its 61st game in program history against a top-10 opponent, having won on eight previous occasions. A win on Wednesday would tie GW's second-highest ranked opponent defeated during the regular season, trailing only No. 7 Rutgers in 1999. The wins over No. 4 North Carolina in 1997 and No. 10/8 California in 2008 were in the NCAA Tournament.
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK: Seven different Colonials have made their Buff & Blue debuts this year - Faith Blethen, Essence Brown, Tori Hyduke, Alexandra Maund, Ariel Stephenson, Mayowa Taiwo and Sydney Zambrotta. In four games, the septet has combined for 66% of the team's points, 62% of the rebounds and 64% of the assists while playing 60% of the minutes.
Newcomers have accounted for 155 of GW's 235 points so far through four games. The Colonials top three scorers - Zambrotta, Hyduke and Blethen - are all new to the program. The relative greenness of the team has led to opportunities for the entire roster. Eleven of the 13 Colonials are averaging at least 10.0 mpg this year, with only one player (Blethen) at or above 30.0 mpg.
LOW DOWN ON LODER: Sophomore Maddie Loder stepped up in her first start of the season at Memphis by setting new career highs in points (18) and assists (7). Loder had scored 10 total points in the season's first three games and dished out four total assists.
The Orono, Minn., native has seen a dramatic shooting turnaround this year, shooting 62.5% overall and 50.0% from deep. Loder struggled from the field in her initial campaign, shooting 29.1% from the field, including 27.2% from deep.
A LOOK AT THE TERRAPINS: Maryland is No. 9 in this week's AP poll and No. 10 in the coaches poll following wins over James Madison (70-68) and Delaware (99-55) last week. UMD's lone loss has come at home to #8/10 South Carolina, 63-54. The Terps are the defending Big Ten regular season champions, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, and are projected to once again top the conference.
Ashley Owusu is the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week, and tops the team with 15.3 ppg. She leads five players that average double figures, including Shakira Austin (12.5), Taylor Mikesell (11.8), Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year Kalia Charles (11.5) and Stephanie Jones (10.3).
