Blethen drops in 16 in first career home game
WASHINGTON - After a season-opening win at Villanova on Wednesday night, the George Washington women's basketball team looked to make it two in a row to open the 2019-20 campaign in their home opener on Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
A pregame Brunchketball event headlined by a Chalk Talk with Head Coach Jennifer Rizzotti got the day started, and with dozens of women's basketball alumnae in attendance on Hall of Fame Weekend, spirits were high at the opening tip.
GW surged to an early 14-4 lead on its Monumental home floor, but the Tigers -- an NCAA Tournament team from a season ago -- were undaunted. Behind All-American Bella Alarie, a Bethesda, Md. native, Princeton closed the quarter on a 9-0 run. The Buff and Blue held a 14-13 lead after the opening stanza, which the visitors wrestled away in the second to hold a 29-27 lead at intermission. Unfortunately for the Colonials, Princeton showed exactly why they're so highly regarded after finishing last season with an RPI of 44, and the second half saw the Jersey school pull away, 75-50.
A pair of newbies for GW provided highlights for the excited home crowd, with first-year Faith Blethen leading the way with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range. The Boothbay (Maine) Bomber also grabbed a half-dozen rebounds. Redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke, who sat all of her first year due to injury, ran point for GW and finished with 10 points.
Princeton meanwhile placed four in double digits, led by point guard Carlie Littlefiled's game-high 22 points and 10 steals in a near triple-double effort. Littlefield's eight rebounds trailed only Alarie's 12, in her 14-point, 12-board double-double.
GW's next opportunity to get back above .500 comes Wednesday morning on the road at Lehigh. Tip-time in Bethlehem, Pa. is 11 a.m.
