Zambrotta and Hyduke combine for 31 points
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A barrage of 3-pointers late in the fourth quarter nearly pulled GW women's basketball all the way back on Wednesday afternoon at Lehigh, but the spirited rally fell just shy in a 59-53 setback.
Trailing by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter, redshirt junior Sydney Zambrotta canned consecutive triples to draw GW within 10 with five minutes remaining. After a pair of Lehigh free throws, GW ran off seven straight points, culminating in another Zambrotta 3-pointer to make it a two-possession game, 56-50, with a minute left.
Despite a fourth trifecta from sophomore Maddie Loder in the waning seconds, the Colonials were unable to climb any closer.
Zambrotta led the team in scoring for the second time in three games with 18 points, 16 of which came after intermission. Redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke provided nine points in the opening frame en route to her third straight double-digit effort, scoring 13 points with two rebounds and two assists.
GW had its best shooting day of the season, hitting 48 percent from the floor and 7-of-13 from beyond the arc, but fell victim to 27 turnovers that turned into 23 points for the Mountain Hawks.
The entire first half was played within a six-point margin with the Buff & Blue gaining their largest lead of the game on a layup from redshirt junior Sarah Overcash early in the second quarter to go up 17-14. Lehigh finished the stanza on a 13-6 spurt to take a three-point lead into the locker room.
The Mountain Hawks held a five-point edge, 38-33, following a Zambrotta bucket mid-way through the third quarter before opening things up with a 12-1 run over the next six minutes to gain their largest lead, 50-34.
Mary Clougherty and Emma Grothaus led the home side with 14 points a piece as Lehigh used an advantage in points scored at the charity stripe (14-6) to provide the difference.
GW continues its three-game road trip with a visit to Memphis this Sunday with another early tip at 11:30 a.m. ET. The Colonials are aiming to sweep the home-and-home series following a 51-38 victory over the Tigers at the Smith Center last season.
