WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball opens up a three-game road trip with a mid-week matinee at Lehigh. Tip-off is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
LAST TIME OUT: The Buff & Blue are coming off a 75-50 setback to Princeton in the home opener on Sunday afternoon. GW led for the majority of the first half before Princeton assumed control with a 24-9 edge in the third quarter. First-year Faith Blethen topped the Colonials in scoring with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to go along with six boards. Redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke reached double figures for the second straight game with 10 points, the only Colonial to do so thus far.
HI, MY NAME IS: Newcomers have accounted for 84 of GW's 118 points so far through two games. The Colonials top four scorers thus far - Sydney Zambrotta, Hyduke, Blethen and Alexandra Maund - are all new to the program. Nine different Colonials are averaging at least 10.0 mpg this year, with only two players (Hyduke and Blethen) at or above 30.0 mpg.
NICE TO MEET YOU: Six different Colonials made their GW debut last Wednesday - Blethen, Essence Brown, Hyduke, Maund, Mayowa Taiwo and Zambrotta. In two games, the sextet has combined for 71% of the team's points, 64% of the rebounds and 78% of the assists while playing 67% of the minutes.
Blethen and Hyduke became the first pair of freshmen to start in the season opener since 2013 when Hannah Schaible and Caira Washington earned the nod against Jackson State. Kelli Prange was the last first-year to start for GW, doing so in 2014.
A LOOK AT THE MOUNTAIN HAWKS: Lehigh is 2-0 on the year following a 72-68 overtime victory at Merrimack on Saturday. Camryn Buhr, a Preseason All-Patriot League selection who scored her 1,000th career point in the win over the Warriors, leads the team with 16.0 ppg and 9.5 rpg through two contests. Cameryn Benz averaged 15.5 ppg and Mary Dougherty chips in 10.5 ppg off the bench to give Lehigh a trio of double-digit scorers.
The Mountain Hawks were projected to win the Patriot League in the conference's preseason poll, earning nine of the 20 first-place votes. Lehigh returns nearly 85% of its scoring and 88% of its minutes from last year's team that went 21-10 overall and 12-6 in the Patriot League.
