Colonials and Wildcats set for noon tip on Thursday
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball welcomes in a top A-10 foe in the Davidson Wildcats on Thursday afternoon as part of Field Trip Day at the Smith Center. Tip-off is set for noon with the game streamed on ESPN+. The Colonials are 4-0 all-time against Davidson with all four meetings having occurred since 2015.
LAST TIME OUT: GW is coming off a 55-54 win at Duquesne on Sunday. The Colonials built a season-high 24-point lead late in the third quarter and survived a 34-11 run from the Dukes that included a stop on the game's final possession. Seniors Mei-Lyn Bautista and Kelsi Mahoney combined for 37 points in the victory. Bautista scored 20+ points for the second straight game, featuring six 3-pointers for the second straight game (also had career-high six 3s vs. VCU Wednesday). Mahoney notched her first career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, both career-bests. She also added a career-high five blocks and hit a career-high five triples on nine attempts in the triumph.
MEI-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mei-Lyn Bautista earned her first career weekly accolade, being named the A-10 Player of the Week on Monday. In two games, Bautista averaged 20.5 ppg, 4.0 apg, and 3.0 spg while hitting 12-of-22 3s (54.5 percent) en route to two wins. After averaging 5.0 ppg/3.7 apg/1.7 spg in the first three league games, Bautista has turned the corner by averaging 15.3 ppg/5.8 apg/3.5 spg in the last four outings. The senior was mired in a 8-for-39 slump (20.5 percent) to begin conference play before going 13-for-27 (48.1 percent) from the floor last week.
Prior to going 12-for-22 from deep last week, Bautista was 6-for-23 (26.1 percent) from 3 in the first five A-10 games. The senior underwent a similar transition last year, averaging 9.4 ppg and 4.8 apg against A-10 foes compared to 6.0 ppg and 3.5 apg against non-conference competition.
MORE ON MEI: Bautista's stat-stuffing ability has garnered her a reputation as one of the top all-around players in the league. After finishing 14th in the nation last year in assist-to-turnover ratio, Bautista is the only player in the Atlantic 10 this season averaging at least 10.0 ppg, 4.0 apg, and 2.0 spg. Against league foes, she currently tops the circuit in steals per game (2.7) and is third in both assists per game (4.9) and 3-pointers per game (2.6). She has posted at least two steals and three assists in six straight games.
BANG-A-RANG: GW tied a season high with 11 triples at Duquesne Sunday, equaling its total against NC State on Nov. 23. Combined with 10 3-pointers hit last Wednesday vs. VCU, the Colonials are 21-of-51 (41.2 percent) from beyond the arc in their last two games. GW's 47 3s in conference play are tied for the most in the league, while its 34.6 percent accuracy is third in the A-10. The Colonials have hit double-digit 3s four times this year, also doing so in back-to-back games on Nov. 22 and 23 in Cancun.
A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS: Davidson sits just a half-game out of first place, shooting out of the gate in A-10 play to a 5-1 mark. The Wildcats are a perfect 3-0 on the road in league action, defeating Duquesne, Rhode Island and most recently, Fordham. Sarah Donovan leads a quartet of Wildcats who average double figures with a team-best 13.2 ppg. She is also tops on the squad with 8.4 rpg. Katie Turner (12.9), Justine Lyon (12.8) and Kianna Speight (10.8) also average at least 10 points per game. Davidson is the top offense in the circuit, averaging 68.3 ppg entering Thursday's game. The Wildcats also thrive on balance with a league-leading 14.8 assists per contest and make their money at the free throw line, hitting at a league-best .739 clip.
